Why a perfect cube beats a flatter box
Corrugated board fails in the middle of a panel, not at the corners. Stretch the same 1,000 cubic inches into a 20 x 10 x 5 carton and you create a 20-inch span that bows under the first box stacked on top of it. The cube keeps every span at 10 inches — the shortest any rectangular box of this volume can offer — so compression loads travel down through corners that sit directly over the corners below.
That column behavior shows up on the pallet. A 40 x 48 pallet takes sixteen 10-inch cubes per layer with no overhang, and four layers stack to 40 inches, comfortably inside a typical 48-inch cap. Sixty-four identical boxes, every corner aligned, nothing pinched at the edge of the deck.
A cube is also the cheapest rectangular shape to buy per cubic inch of capacity, because it encloses more volume per square inch of board than any flatter carton. And when the product inside is dense and roughly even-sided — a candle in a jar, a stack of tiles, a boxed pump — the fit is snug on all six faces. No twelve-inch corridor of air to stuff with kraft paper, no product migrating in transit, less time at the pack station per order.
The 8 lb floor: dim weight on a 10-inch cube

An 8 lb floor is about as gentle as parcel math gets. Ship anything from 8 to 20 lb in this cube and dimensional weight never enters the conversation; you pay for real pounds. Ship a 3 lb candle set and you are billed as 8 lb, but 8 lb sits in the lowest tiers of every rate card, so the penalty stays small in absolute dollars.
