467MP or 468MP for Smooth and Textured Bonding Surfaces

Review 467MP versus 468MP by the surfaces being joined, particularly visible texture and whether the components can conform to one another. The difference is useful when attaching a graphic facing or nameplate: choosing the thicker option should answer a surface-contact need, rather than serve as a general upgrade rule.

Start with the contact conditions

3M’s 467MP technical sheet suggests the nominal 2-mil 200MP adhesive for a thin, smooth, flexible material bonded to a smooth surface. Where texture is visible on either surface, it suggests the nominal 5-mil option. It also notes that two rigid components may require a thicker construction, including a foam-tape route. Both product names identify adhesive transfer tape. The product formats differ in width as well as thickness and buying unit. A decision to change adhesive thickness does not automatically approve changing the width of the bonded area or the amount of material purchased.

Record both faces before choosing

For a hypothetical graphic overlay, describe the back of the overlay and the finished housing surface separately. Record whether each is smooth or visibly textured and whether it is flexible or rigid. A smooth visible front does not describe the hidden bonding face. Keep that distinction clear when a designer sends only a photograph of the finished product.

If the proposed change is intended to address texture, identify which face creates that requirement. If it is intended to bridge an assembly gap or force two rigid parts together, send that geometry back for review instead of treating the 5-mil option as a universal correction.

Keep the thickness basis consistent

The same 3M sheet reports a calculated 2.3-mil adhesive thickness for 467MP and explains that older nominal figures do not represent a change in coating weight. Compare like measurement bases. The release liner is listed separately and should not be added to a finished bond as though it stays between the components.
