Circular masking-disc diameter and placement offset
A circular masking disc can be wider than the area to be covered and still leave part of that area exposed if it is placed off center. Compare the disc diameter, target diameter and possible placement offset together. The diameter difference alone describes only the perfectly centered case.
Identify the supplied disc
T963293 is a half-inch Kapton disc with silicone adhesive, supplied as 1,000 discs per case on a three-inch core. Its description identifies precision masking. The geometry below helps evaluate its supplied circular shape; it does not establish an approved temperature, electrical application or removal result.
Start with the actual boundary that must remain covered. Use its controlled drawing or a measured representative part. If the boundary is irregular, a simple circular calculation is incomplete: inspect the entire outline rather than substituting its approximate diameter.
Calculate the centered margin
For a hypothetical circular target measuring 0.375 inch in diameter, a 0.500-inch disc gives a centered radial margin of (0.500 β 0.375) Γ· 2 = 0.0625 inch. The division by two matters because the diameter difference is shared between opposite sides.
| Center offset | Smallest geometric margin |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0.0625 inch |
| 0.040 inch | 0.0625 β 0.040 = 0.0225 inch |
| 0.070 inch | The offset exceeds the centered margin; full circular coverage is lost |
These calculations assume ideal circles of the stated sizes on one plane. They do not include dimensional variation, a curved surface or a process-required overlap beyond the target boundary. Include those requirements separately before deciding the available margin is sufficient.
Observe the real placement method
Have the intended operator or equipment place representative discs using the proposed reference points. Compare the resulting positions with the required boundary. A sample centered carefully by hand does not establish the offset achieved repeatedly in production.
If the observed placement does not preserve the required coverage, revise the disc selection or placement method through the actual masking-process review. Do not treat extra nominal adhesive area as proof of an acceptable result.
Approve geometry and process together
Keep the target drawing, disc SKU, placement reference and sample observations together. Review surface compatibility and the actual exposure and removal requirements independently. The tape by type buying guide provides tape-type context; the purchase should preserve both the circular format and the placement conditions under which the masking application was approved.
