Continuous Poly Sheeting or Joined Cover Panels?
Choose the roll width after deciding whether the cover may contain joins. Enough total square footage does not establish that one continuous piece can span the required surface. A wider roll can change the panel layout even when both rolls have ample length.
Compare width and thickness independently
CF104C is clear poly sheeting listed at 4 feet by 200 feet and 1 mil, supplied as one roll per case. CF206C is clear polyethylene sheeting listed at 6 feet by 200 feet and 2 mil, also one roll per case. Their widths differ, and so do their film thicknesses.
These examples therefore support a layout comparison, not an equal-material performance comparison. Choosing the six-foot roll changes more than the number of panels. Keep the film-thickness requirement visible while evaluating width.
Draw the surface and every join
Consider a hypothetical flat surface measuring 5 x 10 feet, with no edge drop included in this first drawing. Orient the roll length along the ten-foot direction. A six-foot-wide piece can span the five-foot width as a single panel, leaving one foot of total width beyond the rectangle. A four-foot-wide piece cannot span that same width in one panel in the stated orientation.
One possible two-panel layout uses two four-foot-wide strips. If the design independently calls for a half-foot overlap, their combined nominal span is 4 + 4 - 0.5 = 7.5 feet. The half-foot figure illustrates the geometry only; it is not a recommended overlap or a sealing specification.

A visible overlap is not a sealed joint
Two pieces placed over one another have a join. That observation alone does not establish a moisture barrier, wind resistance or suitability for a construction application. If the job has a barrier or attachment requirement, the joint method needs its own specification and evidence.
Keep intended access openings separate from joins that should remain closed during use. Otherwise, the same overlap can be treated as a removable flap by one operator and a permanent connection by another.
Select the format from the finished layout
Add edge drops and required attachment areas before finalizing cut lengths. Record roll orientation, panel boundaries, overlap treatment and any intentional openings. This resolves the seam decision before stock is cut, while keeping material choice and application approval distinct from the geometry.
