Flat Poly Bag Fit: Opening Perimeter and Loading Direction
A flat bag's width must accommodate the perimeter around the face entering the opening. An object can be narrower than the printed bag width and still be too bulky to pass through. For a rectangular object, both dimensions of the entering face matter.
This method screens straight loading in three face-first orientations. It assumes a rigid rectangular shape and does not rely on stretching the bag or compressing the item.
Start with an ideal opening limit
PB2454 clear flat poly bags are listed at 40 × 48 inches and supplied as 250 bags per case. For an ideal flat opening 40 inches wide, the two faces together provide a nominal perimeter of 2 × 40 = 80 inches.
That is a geometric screening limit, not a confirmed usable opening. Seams, dimensional variation and the shape of the actual mouth must be checked on a sample. A calculation that already exceeds the nominal limit gives a reason to reject that loading direction; a smaller result earns a trial.
Compare the three entering faces
Consider a hypothetical rectangular assembly measuring 32 × 18 × 9 inches, including its existing packaging. The perimeter around a rectangular face is twice the sum of its two sides.

Looking only at the 32-inch side would miss the second failure: 32 is less than 40, but the 9-inch thickness takes the required perimeter to 82 inches. Turning to the 18 × 9 inch face reduces the opening requirement while increasing the distance that must extend into the bag.
Keep bag length as a separate check
For the third orientation, subtracting the 32-inch object length from the listed 48-inch bag length gives 16 inches of nominal difference. That is not 16 inches of guaranteed closing material. The bag must also form around the closed end, and the selected closure needs its own space.
Load the complete assembly into a sample in the selected direction. Let the bag form around the bottom naturally, then evaluate the actual closing position. Do not transfer a successful opening calculation into a claim that the finished bag closes.
Approve a loading direction, not just a bag size
Record the entering face, assembly dimensions and closing method with the bag SKU. A replacement insert or grouped accessory can change the perimeter even when the main item stays the same.
