Gift Boxes, Lids and Bottoms: Count Complete Sets

Count complete gift boxes before counting cases. When a box uses a separately purchased lid and bottom, the smaller compatible component quantity determines how many complete sets you can assemble. Buying 100 bottoms and 50 lids provides 50 complete sets, with 50 bottoms left over.

Use that distinction when preparing an order or replenishing a gift-packing station. A purchase request for “125 boxes” should identify whether the supplier is providing complete boxes or individual components.

These examples show different order units and sizes. The 4-inch gift box is not a substitute for the 10-inch components. A shared nominal footprint also does not establish lid-to-bottom compatibility; use an approved matching pair for the calculations below.

GB442 uses one-piece construction and is supplied as 100 gift boxes per case. DGB10106W is a bottom-only product supplied 50 per case; DGBL1010W is a lid-only product supplied 50 per case. The two component listings are examples of separate order units, not a confirmed matching pair.

Plan a job in finished sets

Suppose a hypothetical job needs 125 complete gift boxes, with no starting stock. Compare these two order structures only after the chosen product or component pair meets the job's fit requirements:

  • A complete-box product supplied 100 per case: two cases provide 200 complete boxes. After packing 125, 75 remain.
  • An approved lid-and-bottom pair, each supplied 50 per case: three cases of bottoms and three cases of lids provide 150 of each component. They can form 150 complete sets, leaving 25 complete sets after packing 125.

The second order contains six cases and 300 individual components, but only 150 complete sets. Adding lids and bottoms together would double the reported packing capacity. Likewise, one case of each component supplies 50 sets, not 100.

Replenish the component that limits production

Now assume the station already has 120 usable bottoms and 75 usable, matching lids, and the next job needs 100 sets. The immediate shortage is 25 lids. No additional bottoms are required for that job.

At 50 lids per case, one case brings the lid stock to 125. With 120 bottoms, the station can assemble 120 complete sets. After the 100-set job, the balance is 20 bottoms and 25 lids: enough for 20 more sets, plus five unmatched lids.

Use these two calculations for each approved pair:

  • Complete sets available = the smaller of usable lid stock and usable bottom stock.
  • Component cases to order = shortage of that component divided by its case count, rounded up.

Count unusable or reserved components separately. A lid assigned to another job is not available for this one, even when it is physically on the shelf.

Keep different component pairs separate

Do not pool all lids into one total. Keep each approved lid SKU connected to its bottom SKU, and calculate complete sets within that pair. Two sets of nominal dimensions may look similar while the actual assembled fit differs.

Record the finished-set target, usable starting stock, exact component SKUs, case counts, and expected balance on the purchase request. Add trial or replacement quantities explicitly if your job requires them.
