Identify the Bonding Surface Before Choosing Transfer Tape

Specify the surface the adhesive actually touches before choosing a transfer tape. “Metal housing” and “plastic panel” are incomplete bonding descriptions when the metal is coated or the plastic resin is unknown. A change in finish can matter even when the component drawing keeps the same shape and dimensions.

Separate the component from its exposed face

3M explains that a powder coating becomes the bonding surface, rather than the metal beneath it. The manufacturer also identifies surface condition, coating, flexibility and surface energy as selection inputs. See 3M’s Substrates and Adhesion guidance.

For a hypothetical nameplate mounted on a coated steel enclosure, write “back of nameplate to specified enclosure coating” in the assembly record. Keep the steel description as component information, but do not let it replace the identity of the contact surface. If a supplier changes the coating, route the bond for review along with the finish change.

Use named adhesive routes as a shortlist

3M’s 927 product guidance specifically discusses foams, polyethylene and polypropylene. This makes it a different candidate to review, not an automatic replacement for 467MP on every plastic. The two order formats also have different widths, so their purchase quantities do not describe equivalent application footprints.

Identify both sides of the joint

List the first material and finish, then the second material and finish. For a molded plastic component, obtain the actual resin or grade from its specification instead of guessing from appearance. For a coated component, retain the coating identity used in the reviewed assembly. Include any relevant process change in the same record.

3M classifies polyethylene and polypropylene among low-surface-energy materials, for which the range of suitable adhesives is more limited. See its surface-energy explanation. This classification helps direct selection; it is not a substitute for evaluating the actual surfaces and joint.

Keep substitutions tied to the surface record

A tape substitution and a component-finish substitution should reach the same assembly owner. Retain the chosen tape with the exact materials it was reviewed against. Purchasing can then distinguish replenishing an established application from starting a different bonding problem, even if the replacement component looks identical.
