Label Face Height Versus Media Repeat Distance

A label's face height and its repeat distance along the backing are different measurements. Keep them separate when preparing artwork or recording stock specifications. A product named 4 x 6 identifies a label size; it does not, by itself, specify the distance from one label's leading edge to the next.

This example uses THL114, listed as 4 x 6-inch white matte thermal transfer labels, supplied as four rolls per case. The listing does not provide the backing width, gap size or repeat distance. Those fields need the actual stock or its specification before they become production inputs.

Give each measurement its own name

Measurements to keep separate on a label-stock record
Field What to record What it does not establish
Label face The dimensions of one label itself The full backing width or the gap between labels
Backing width The edge-to-edge width of the supporting liner The usable width of the label face
Gap, if present The distance between successive label faces Additional printable space on either label
Repeat distance Distance between corresponding points on successive labels along the feed direction The face height by itself

Confirm which direction the labels travel before naming the dimension along the feed path. Do not assume that the first number in a product name supplies every width field a printer or layout program asks for.

Work through a hypothetical repeat

Assume a sample has a 6.000-inch face along the feed direction and a 0.125-inch gap between faces. For that simple repeating layout, the leading-edge-to-leading-edge distance is 6.000 + 0.125 = 6.125 inches.

The 0.125-inch gap is not part of the 6-inch label face. An artwork rectangle extending 6.125 inches in that direction would include material outside the face. Keep the actual printable area within its confirmed boundaries; even the full face dimensions do not establish a printer's available print margins.

These numbers illustrate the distinction. They are not specifications for THL114, and they should not be entered as settings for an unverified roll or printer.

Check repeated positions on the actual stock

Inspect a sample from the intended roll. Identify the label edges and any gap or other registration feature that is actually present. Record the dimensions with their units and measurement direction. Compare successive labels so that a damaged edge or an ambiguous starting point does not become the assumed repeat.

If the construction does not match the simple face-plus-gap example, use its documented arrangement. Do not invent a gap where the stock uses another registration method. Keep any unconfirmed field marked as unresolved when requesting the complete media specification.

Match the record to the requested field

When a printer or software workflow asks for a media dimension, check its documentation for what that field means. Face height, backing width and repeat distance are not interchangeable answers. This worksheet does not prescribe sensing, calibration, ribbon or printer settings.

Save the exact label SKU, stock dimensions, printer model and approved layout together after the actual setup has been checked. Recheck the relevant dimensions if the stock changes, even when the new label has the same face-size wording.

Use the thermal label size chart to compare face sizes separately from the repeat measurement. Retain THL114's four-roll case unit without inferring an unstated number of labels per roll.
