For a UPC-A barcode on a cylindrical retail package, review the barcode orientation on the actual curved surface. A label can physically wrap around the cylinder while part of its printed symbol turns away from the reader. Nominal label width alone does not answer that visibility question.

Use guidance for the actual barcode application

GS1 US guidance for UPC-A barcodes recommends ladder orientation on cylindrical containers when the surface curve exceeds thirty degrees. In that arrangement, the bars run perpendicular to the tube's lengthwise axis and the barcode's width runs along the tube, keeping that width visible rather than wrapping it around the circumference.

This guidance concerns the UPC-A retail application described by GS1 US. Do not automatically apply the same placement rule to a different symbol, a two-dimensional code or a logistics label. Establish the actual application requirements before preparing the artwork.

Draw the cylinder axis and the barcode width

Mark the lengthwise axis on a sketch of the real package. Then draw the UPC-A bars and the direction across those bars. Label that direction as the barcode width, including the required clear areas. This avoids the ambiguity of asking whether a rectangular label is simply portrait or landscape.

In a hypothetical retail tube, rotating the entire label changes both the text arrangement and the barcode direction. The artwork owner may instead need to arrange the barcode separately within the label. Keep the intended symbol dimensions and clear areas intact rather than compressing the code to make a preferred orientation fit.

Trial the finished curved placement

Apply a representative printed sample to the actual package at the intended location. Review the complete symbol in its final orientation, including seams, edges and other artwork. Test through the application's required print-quality and reading process; an attractive flat proof does not show the finished curved result.

If the proposed face or location cannot accommodate the required layout, review another approved arrangement. Do not treat a larger wraparound label as proof that the symbol can remain fully visible in an unsuitable position.

Keep physical stock and artwork approval connected
