Mailer Price Premium and Packing-Time Break-Even
A higher-priced mailer covers its material premium through labor value only when the measured time reduction is large enough. Calculate that threshold before treating a faster-looking packing method as a better purchase. Keep suitability and protection approval separate from this cost comparison.
Use ML1082 white corrugated literature mailers as an exact purchasing reference when that is your approved format. They are listed at 10.25 × 8.25 × 2 inches, with ECT-32-B board details, and supplied as 50 per bundle. Normalize a quote to individual mailers, then include the other materials required by each proposed packing method.
Calculate the required seconds saved
Let the material premium be the proposed method's complete material cost per pack minus the current method's cost. Use a consistent hourly labor cost chosen for your operation. With a positive premium and a positive hourly rate:
Break-even seconds saved per pack = material premium × 3,600 ÷ hourly labor cost.
Suppose the proposed method costs $0.12 more per pack and the chosen labor rate is $24 per hour. The threshold is 0.12 × 3,600 ÷ 24 = 18 seconds per pack. These are hypothetical inputs, not Packrift prices, wage guidance or a productivity claim.

Measure the work that the purchase actually changes
Compare equivalent orders using approved packing methods and the same start and finish points. Include material preparation, packing, closure and necessary rework. If one method uses supplies prepared elsewhere, include that work rather than timing only the final bench step.
Record person-time when multiple people contribute. Two operators working simultaneously for one minute contribute two person-minutes, even though only one minute passes on the clock. Compare labor per accepted finished pack, and keep unusual interruptions visible so they can be investigated rather than silently removed.
Repeat the comparison under representative conditions. A material change that shifts work to a second operator has not necessarily removed that labor. Nor does the shortest observed cycle establish the normal time for a complete run.
Separate useful capacity from cash saved
The calculation values time; it does not prove that payroll falls. If staffing and paid hours stay unchanged, the immediate result may be available capacity. Identify the work that can use that capacity before recording a cash saving.
Keep one-time setup, training and equipment expenses outside this simple per-pack comparison, then account for them separately before committing. Save the material costs, labor-rate basis, observed time and approved methods with the purchasing decision. Recalculate when those inputs change.
