Estimate how much packaging your operation burns through before you reorder. Size up carton-sealing tape by the month, stretch film by the pallet, or void fill by the box — using your own volumes and pack specs, so your reorder points match real usage.
Each strip runs the length of the box's longest side (the top center seam) plus the lap that wraps down each end, so strip length = longest side + 2 × lap. Default is 2 strips (top and bottom seam). For the H-tape method, set strips to 3 to add the two end seams.

How to plan packaging quantities
Knowing your monthly burn rate is what turns packaging from a fire drill into a line item. Model each material from your real pack spec — strips per box, wrap passes per pallet, void space per order — then scale it by your shipping volume to set reorder points that don't leave you short. The same numbers surface where oversized boxes or heavy void fill are quietly inflating cost, so you can right-size before the next order.

How is tape usage per box estimated?
Each strip is modeled as the box's longest side, where the top center seam runs, plus a lap that wraps down each end — so strip length equals the longest side plus twice the lap. The default is 2 strips, sealing the top and bottom seams. For the H-tape method, which also seals the two end edges, set strips to 3. That per-box length is multiplied by boxes per day and ship days per month, then divided by the roll length to give rolls per month.
How much stretch film does one pallet take?
Film on the load is the perimeter times the wrap passes needed to cover the height, plus top and bottom wraps. That raw figure is divided by the pre-stretch factor: at 250 percent pre-stretch, one foot off the roll yields about 3.5 feet of applied film, so the film actually pulled from the roll drops by roughly that factor. Pre-stretch is the single biggest driver of real film consumption.
How do you calculate void fill per box?
Void volume is the box interior volume minus the item volume. Crumpled kraft paper lofts to a thickness that fills the box, so the feet of flat paper needed is the void volume divided by the paper width, the chosen loft in inches, and 12 to convert to feet. A looser crumple lofts thicker and uses less paper per box.
Are these results exact?
They are planning estimates. Real consumption depends on pack technique, product mix, film and paper grade, and machine settings. Use the numbers to set reorder points, then adjust to your measured usage.
