Pieces or Inner Packs on Pick-Face Labels?

Print the quantity unit beside the pick quantity. “Pick 3” is ambiguous when a bin holds packs of several pieces. A label should tell the operator whether the requested number refers to individual pieces, unopened inner packs or purchasing cases.

The part number identifies the item; the unit tells the picker how much to remove. Keep those fields separate. A location label can be correctly attached to the right shelf and still leave the quantity instruction unclear.

Name the units used at each step

In this hypothetical stockroom, part H24 arrives in cases containing ten inner packs, with twelve pieces in each inner pack. Purchasing uses cases, replenishment moves inner packs, and orders request pieces. These are example packing ratios, not specifications for a Packrift product.

An order for 24 pieces needs two complete inner packs if unopened packs are accepted by that order. An instruction to pick two cases would instead remove 240 pieces. A correct part number does not resolve that tenfold difference.

Choose the fields that belong at the pick face

A useful hypothetical insert reads: “H24 / pick unit: pieces / inner pack: 12 pieces / verify requested quantity.” If the operation only picks unopened packs, state “pick unit: inner packs” and keep the twelve-piece conversion visible. Use the wording that matches the actual order system.

Do not put a purchasing case count in the largest type if the picker normally works in pieces. Give the immediate instruction prominence, with the conversion next to it. Keep the shelf address recognizable as an address rather than letting it look like another quantity.

Handle partial packs explicitly

For a hypothetical order requesting eighteen pieces, one complete twelve-piece pack leaves six pieces to pick. If the workflow permits opening packs, record and identify the remaining six pieces according to that process. If it does not permit partial packs, route the order for resolution rather than silently rounding eighteen up to twenty-four.

This distinction is a work instruction, not a reason to change the product identity. Keep the conversion current if the supplied inner-pack quantity changes.

Select an insert holder for the wording

LH202 clear vinyl press-on label holders are listed at 4 × 8 inches, with self-adhesive backing and a side-load design. A case contains 50 holders plus white inserts. Evaluate this format using the actual unit wording and its intended viewing position.

Print a sample and have an operator explain what an example order would require without additional coaching. Check readability after insertion and mounting. The holder's listed size is not a guaranteed usable print area.

Approve the item identifier, pick unit and conversion as one record. That lets a replacement insert preserve the quantity meaning instead of copying only a part number and an unexplained number.
