Rectangular Label Orientation Around a Cylindrical Package
For a rectangular label on a cylindrical package, check two different directions: the length wrapping around the curved surface and the height running along the cylinder. Rotating the label trades one requirement for the other. A satisfactory wrap length can still leave too much label height.
Measure the finished labeling surface
Use the actual outside diameter at the intended label position and the usable straight height between shoulders, caps or other interruptions. Do not substitute an inside tube diameter or an unrelated catalog dimension for the finished surface measurement.
For a circular cylinder, circumference equals Ο Γ outside diameter. This gives the distance around the surface. It does not establish whether a particular label material or adhesive can remain attached to that surface.
Worked example: compare both orientations
Assume a hypothetical cylinder has an outside diameter of 1.75 inches and 5 inches of usable axial height. Its circumference is Ο Γ 1.75, approximately 5.498 inches. Also assume the labeling brief prohibits edge overlap and trimming.

Keep the design requirements explicit
Neither orientation meets this particular brief. That does not mean overlap is universally unacceptable. If the actual design permits it, record the allowed arrangement and review the resulting covered area. Do not change an overlap or trimming rule simply to make a preferred stock size appear to fit.
Likewise, a gap is a geometric result, not evidence that the intended information remains suitably positioned. Keep any required clear surface, artwork and placement constraints with the actual label specification.
