Ribbon Width Must Cover Label Media and Liner
Choose a thermal-transfer ribbon against the width of the media that passes under the printhead, including its liner. A narrow barcode does not make the rest of the stock disappear from that path. This matters when a purchasing team tries to reduce ribbon width because the printed image occupies only the center of a label.
THT105 is a black wax thermal-transfer ribbon listed at 3.15 inches wide and 984 feet long, with 36 ribbons per case. Its width is a real selection input. The width of the barcode artwork is a different input and cannot establish that this ribbon covers the intended media.
Give artwork and media separate width fields
In its ZD620 and ZD420 media specifications, Zebra directs the ribbon to cover the entire media width, including liner, to protect the printhead. Use the manual for the actual printer to establish its ribbon requirements and limits; this example does not declare THT105 compatible with either model.
Record three widths on the job sheet: the printed design, the label face, and the full edge-to-edge media. Only the first describes the artwork. Do not enter a face dimension into the media field without checking where the liner edges sit. The roll supplier's drawing or the actual specified stock should identify those boundaries.
Use the width comparison to reject a false economy
Suppose a hypothetical label face is 3.00 inches wide, the liner is 3.25 inches wide, and the printed design occupies 2.50 inches. A 3.15-inch ribbon exceeds the image and face widths, but it is still 0.10 inch narrower than the media. That is why an artwork-only comparison can select the wrong candidate.
The calculation does not supply a universal extra margin or a loading offset. It simply eliminates a candidate that fails the full-width comparison in this example. Obtain an appropriate width within the actual printer's permitted range, then check the remaining ribbon specification, including formulation and roll configuration.
Keep width changes under purchasing control
When the label supplier changes, compare the full media specification even if the face size remains unchanged. When the ribbon supplier changes, preserve the required width on the purchase line instead of replacing it with a note such as “for three-inch labels.” That shorthand loses the dimension that drove the selection.
Keep THT105's 984-foot length and 36-ribbon case quantity separate from the width decision. A different length or case quantity cannot remedy insufficient coverage. Use the ribbon width buying guide to locate candidates after the media width and printer requirements are known.
