Self-Mating Fastener or Separate Hook and Loop Components?

Choose the fastening-face arrangement before deciding how to stock replacement parts. A self-mating fastener uses the documented same-type mating arrangement. A conventional hook-and-loop pair requires complementary faces. Both arrangements still need material at the two contacting positions; self-mating does not mean one piece can attach to a bare panel.

Compare the supplied fastening formats

DK3M143 is a 1-inch x 150-foot clear polypropylene Dual Lock low-profile fastener tape, supplied as two rolls per case. Its description explicitly identifies a self-mating design and acrylic adhesive. This establishes the fastening format without assigning an unlisted engaged thickness, opening force, or supported load.

VEL107 is a 5/8-inch x 75-foot black nylon hook strip with self-adhesive backing. VEL108 is a separately listed black nylon loop-strip format, also 5/8 inch x 75 feet, sold separately. Its description directs the buyer to pair loop with hook. An order for the hook component alone is therefore a different supply plan from an order covering both component types.

Draw both contact positions

For a hypothetical removable display, mark one fastening position on the fixed support and the other on the removable panel. With the separate hook-and-loop arrangement, give the positions complementary component assignments. With the documented self-mating arrangement, the drawing can specify the same fastener type at both positions.

The second drawing still contains two contact areas. Purchasing one stock type simplifies the component names in that drawing; it does not eliminate the opposing piece or establish the amount of material needed. Keep the attachment layout and material allocation explicit rather than treating the word self-mating as a quantity instruction.

Plan repair stock around the installed arrangement

If a facility maintains multiple display designs, identify the installed system before issuing replacement material. A replacement panel for a hook-equipped support needs the intended mating component. A panel using the selected self-mating design needs the same documented system carried through its repair record.

Keep different fastening systems separately identified even when the strips look similar in width. The self-mating statement for DK3M143 does not establish compatibility with every other Dual Lock product, conventional loop tape, or an unidentified fastener already attached to a fixture.

Approve the mounting and the mating action separately

The adhesive attachment to a panel remains a separate interface from the fastening faces that open. Preserve the intended opening location in the assembly drawing and evaluate the actual substrates and removal action through the approved assembly process. Neither self-mating nor hook-and-loop wording establishes damage-free adhesive removal or a mounted-load rating.
