Separate Package Identity for Multi-Parcel Orders
One customer order can produce several physical parcels. Give each parcel a distinct identity through packing and label application so the right carrier label stays with the right carton. Repeating the order number on every package is useful for grouping, but does not distinguish the individual pieces.
Build the package list before printing
For a hypothetical order O58, carton A contains six brackets, carton B contains four rails, and carton C contains two accessory kits. Create three package records linked to O58. Keep the contents and the final measured shipping details with their own package record.
| Package reference | Contents | Label assignment |
|---|---|---|
| O58-A | Six brackets | Carrier label issued for A |
| O58-B | Four rails | Carrier label issued for B |
| O58-C | Two accessory kits | Carrier label issued for C |
The references are illustrative. Use an identifier scheme supported by the actual shipping system and keep it visible through the label-application step. Do not rely solely on a carton's position on the bench, because the physical order can change after labels print.
Keep the carrier's piece identities intact
FedEx's multipackage tracking explanation describes a unique tracking number for each package and a master number when the shipment is created together. That distinction supports individual-piece tracking within a grouped shipment; it does not make one package's label interchangeable with another's.
Use the label generated for each actual package. Compare its package reference with the carton before application, then record that connection. If only two of three cartons are ready, leave the third visible in the dispatch record instead of treating the order-level label printing step as proof all three have left.
Select the physical label stock separately
THL114 is 4 x 6 inch white matte thermal-transfer label stock, supplied as four rolls per case. The stock is blank: its product description does not supply your shipment's address, package number or tracking identity. Confirm the printer, ribbon and roll requirements for the actual printing system before ordering it.
A four-roll case is not four shipping labels, and the stated case count does not establish labels per roll. Calculate procurement from the confirmed roll specification and actual label output, including your operation's expected setup waste. The shipping-label format guide provides broader purchasing routes.
Resolve reprints against the same package
If a label needs replacing, follow the shipping system's reprint or replacement procedure and make the active label clear. Preserve the association to the intended carton rather than assigning the next sheet in the print stack. Finish dispatch reconciliation at the package level, then roll those results up to the customer order.
