Shelf Location Labels or Movable Container Tags?
A shelf address belongs to the location; a container identifier belongs to the movable bin. Keep those roles separate when the same bin can move between shelves or hold different parts. A contents description answers a third question: what is in the bin now?
Decide which of these identities your workflow needs before choosing where to mount a holder or attach a tag. A label that says only “A01” becomes ambiguous if the container carrying it is moved to another shelf.
Make the three roles explicit

These codes and the workflow below are hypothetical. Use your team's own identifiers. The distinction between the objects is more important than the code format.
Change the relationship when the bin moves
Initially, bin B17 holds P11 at shelf A01. Move that same loaded bin to shelf C03: B17 and P11 remain unchanged, while the recorded location becomes C03. Shelf A01 keeps its own address even while empty.

Copying all three values from the previous label would be wrong for several of these events. Update the changed relationship and remove obsolete contents information. Do not rename a physical shelf simply because a bin moved away from it.
Choose the display for the object it identifies
LH201 clear vinyl press-on label holders are listed at 2 × 3.5 inches with self-adhesive backing and a side-load design. A case contains 50 holders plus white inserts. This is a candidate format for a fixed shelf display whose insert can be changed when needed.
G10051 manila shipping tags are listed at 4¾ × 2⅜ inches, 13 pt, with a reinforced 3/16 inch eyelet and 1,000 tags per case. The product description identifies string or wire as attachment options. Select attachment supplies separately; their inclusion is not established by the tag listing.
An attached tag can be evaluated for the traveling container identifier. That does not make a press-on holder transferable between surfaces, or establish that a particular attachment fits every bin. Test each display at its actual location and keep the roles clear in the printed or written wording.
Rehearse a move before labeling the whole area
In a hypothetical trial, have one operator move B17 from A01 to C03 and another locate it from the updated record. Then change its contents and ask which identifiers need revision. Check the physical labels against the record after each event.
