Will Your Shipping Label Fit a Small Carton? Face Layout Worksheet

A shipping label needs enough clear space on the closed carton. Start with the printed label’s actual width and height, then measure the outside panel where it will sit. A box’s listed inside dimensions cannot tell you how much uninterrupted label space remains after closing and taping.

This layout check helps you compare a label and a carton before ordering packaging. It does not select a carrier label format or change its required markings.

Measure the closed carton, face by face

Pack a sample with the intended contents and close it using your normal method. Look at each candidate face. Mark seams, tape, folds, protrusions and information that must stay visible. Measure a clear rectangle within those boundaries. Do not add two disconnected patches together: the entire label needs a usable placement.

Check both label orientations

For label dimensions w × h and clear panel dimensions W × H, the label fits within the measured rectangle when either w ≤ W and h ≤ H, or h ≤ W and w ≤ H. This is a flat rectangle check. It does not account for any extra space required by your label supplier or shipping service.

For example, assume the printed label measures 4 × 6 inches and a sample has only a 4 × 5 inch clear rectangle. It fails both orientations: 6 exceeds 5 in the first orientation, and 6 exceeds 4 after rotation. Those are assumed sample measurements, not the outside dimensions of a listed Packrift box.

If your process requires a clear margin of m on every side, first test a rectangle of (w + 2m) × (h + 2m). Use the margin required for your actual label and process; this page does not prescribe one.

When the rectangle does not fit

  1. Check another face on the same finished carton.
  2. Review whether your approved closing method can leave a different clear area.
  3. Use another label format only when your shipping service and printing process support it.
  4. If needed, sample a different carton and repeat both the product-fit and label-layout checks.

Do not shrink, crop, bend or wrap required label information simply to make this rectangle test pass. Follow the requirements for the actual shipment.

Save the approved combination

Record the carton SKU, printed label dimensions, chosen face, placement from two panel edges, closing method and a photo of the completed sample. Read the printed information and scan the intended code using the device in your process. Repeat the check when the carton, label stock, layout or packing method changes.

These figures help you choose a sample for the contents. They do not prove that a 4 × 6 inch label fits any particular face: panel edges, tape, and the finished closure still need measuring.
