Side-Loading Boxes for Flat Assemblies With Protrusions

A flat assembly must pass through the opening before it can occupy the box. Choose a side-loading format when the loading path across the long face is part of the packing requirement, then check the complete assembly along that path. Final dimensions alone do not describe the entry step.

Use the documented opening format

10212SSFOL and 12317SSFOL are self-seal side-loading corrugated boxes. Both product descriptions explicitly state that flat products slide in across the long face rather than through a small end. This is the construction detail relevant to the decision; neither description supplies a dimensioned clear-opening drawing.

Two listed side-loading cartons
SKU Listed dimensions Order unit
10212SSFOL 10.875 x 2 x 12.25 in 25 boxes per bundle
12317SSFOL 12.5 x 3 x 17.5 in 25 boxes per bundle

Both listings state ECT-32. That rating is separate from opening geometry. These different sizes illustrate the same loading format; they are not interchangeable candidates for an unspecified item.

Draw entry and final position separately

Consider a hypothetical flat display panel with a bracket projecting from its rear face. A drawing of the panel resting in the carton shows the final occupied space. A second drawing should show the bracket's path as the panel enters, including any protective wrap already attached. The protrusion must clear the opening throughout that movement, not just after the item reaches its final position.

Mark the leading edge, the direction of travel and the intended upright face. If the proposed method requires tilting the assembly, include the space used during that tilt. Do not treat an enclosed diagonal as proof that the same item can enter through the actual opening.

Choose the sequence before assigning the carton

Decide whether an accessory is attached before loading or placed separately afterward. That choice changes the assembly that must pass through the opening. If the product must remain assembled, a method that works only after removing its bracket does not meet the stated requirement.

Keep wrap, inserts and protrusions in the loading drawing. A bare panel that enters easily does not establish the route for the complete pack. Resolve any missing opening dimensions with the actual carton before specifying a fixture or automated loading motion.

Record the repeatable loading instruction

The useful instruction identifies the carton SKU, complete item configuration, entry face, leading edge and final orientation. It should make the loading method clear without requiring an operator to discover a different angle each time. Evaluate the finished package's protection requirements separately from this access decision.
