Carton Sealing Tape
SELECTION EXPERT ADVICE
Need help choosing tape?
Pick the right carton sealing tape for your sealing method and load weight
Use these buying guides to compare adhesives, mil thickness, and tape types.
Overview
Carton sealing tape by the case. Pressure-sensitive box tape in the adhesives, widths, and thicknesses that keep shipping cartons closed — acrylic, hot melt, and natural rubber, in hand and machine-length rolls. Everything here ships in bulk by the case from five US warehouses, no account minimum, with free-shipping tiers on qualifying volume. The adhesive you pick matters more than the brand: match it to your box stock, storage conditions, and how the carton is sealed. The table below breaks it down.
Which adhesive: acrylic vs. hot melt vs. natural rubber
All three are "packing tape," but they behave differently on recycled corrugate, in cold or humid warehouses, and over long storage. Pick the adhesive first, then the width and mil.
| Adhesive | Strengths | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic | Wide temperature range, holds in humidity, UV- and age-resistant; adhesion builds and holds over time; quieter unwind | Long-term storage, cartons that see heat, cold, sun, or humidity; smooth clean box surfaces |
| Hot melt | High initial tack and strong shear; excellent on recycled corrugate; grips fast for high-throughput lines | Overstuffed or heavy cartons, high-recycled-content boxes, fast automated or hand sealing at room temperature |
| Natural rubber | Most aggressive, forgiving adhesive; bonds to rough, dusty, cold, or slightly moist surfaces | Freezer and cold-chain, dusty or irregular surfaces, difficult recycled or uneven cartons |
Quick read: hot melt is the everyday high-tack default and the value pick for recycled boxes; acrylic is the choice when cartons will be stored a long time or exposed to temperature swings, humidity, or sunlight; natural rubber is the specialist for freezers, dust, and surfaces the other two will not hold.
Width and mil (thickness) guidance
Backing thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Thicker tape resists tearing and holds heavier loads.
- 1.6–1.8 mil — light to standard cartons, e-commerce parcels, general fulfillment. The economical everyday weight.
- 2.0–2.5 mil — medium to heavy cartons, added tape strength, better tear resistance for busier lines.
- 3.0 mil and up — heavy, dense, or overstuffed cartons that need maximum hold.
On width: 2" is the standard for most cartons; 3" gives more holding power on heavy or wide-flap boxes and is common on automated case sealers. For a secure close, use the H-taping method (one strip down the center seam, one across each end flap).
Dispenser vs. hand vs. machine rolls
Hand-dispenser tape
Standard short-length rolls (commonly 55–110 yd) that load into a handheld tape gun. Best for low-to-moderate volume, mixed carton sizes, and pack stations where an operator seals boxes one at a time.
Machine-length tape
Longer rolls (often 1,000 yd and up) wound for automated case sealers and taping machines. Fewer roll changes per shift, consistent tension, and lower cost per foot — the right choice for high-volume, uniform-carton operations.
Pair your tape with the right box and cushioning: Corrugated Boxes, Void Fill, and Kraft Paper for wrapping and dunnage. For volume pricing on a full pallet of tape, request a bulk quote.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between acrylic and hot melt tape?
- Hot melt has higher initial tack and grips recycled corrugate fast, ideal for heavy or overstuffed cartons at room temperature. Acrylic has a wider temperature range and resists humidity, UV, and aging, so it holds better through long storage and environmental swings.
- When should I use natural rubber tape?
- Natural rubber is the most aggressive, forgiving adhesive. Use it for freezer and cold-chain shipping, dusty or moist surfaces, and rough or irregular cartons where acrylic or hot melt will not bond.
- What tape works best on recycled boxes?
- Hot melt grips highly recycled corrugate well thanks to its high initial tack. Natural rubber is another strong option for especially rough or dusty recycled stock.
- What does "mil" mean for tape?
- A mil is one-thousandth of an inch and refers to the backing thickness. Higher mil tape resists tearing and holds heavier cartons; 1.6–1.8 mil suits standard boxes, 2 mil and up for heavier loads.
- Should I use 2" or 3" wide tape?
- 2" is standard for most cartons. Step up to 3" for heavy, dense, or wide-flap boxes and for automated case sealers that need more holding surface.
- What is the H-taping method?
- Seal the center seam with one strip, then run a strip across each end flap where it meets the box edge, forming an "H." It distributes stress and keeps flaps from popping under load.
- What is the difference between hand and machine tape rolls?
- Hand rolls are shorter lengths for handheld dispensers and low-to-moderate volume. Machine rolls are longer, wound for automated case sealers, with fewer changeovers and a lower cost per foot at volume.
- Does acrylic tape hold up outdoors or in storage?
- Yes. Acrylic resists UV, oxidation, and temperature swings and its bond holds over time, which makes it the preferred choice for long-term storage and cartons exposed to sun or heat.
- Why does my tape pop off in cold warehouses?
- Many hot melt tapes lose tack in cold or humid conditions. Switch to natural rubber for freezer and cold-chain use, or acrylic for a wide temperature range.
- How is carton sealing tape sold?
- In bulk by the case. Rolls per case and roll length vary by product; larger volumes qualify for free-shipping tiers.
