A Carton Opening Panel Between the Seam and Contents
Choose a carton-top panel by the opening route it needs to cover. A pad placed between product layers has a different position from one placed immediately beneath the closing flaps. The packing instruction should make that final top-panel step explicit before the carton is sealed.
Give the top panel a defined job
The Northeast Document Conservation Center's packing leaflet describes placing cardboard above the contents before closing the outer box to help protect them when it is opened with a cutter. This is a packaging layer, not permission to use a particular blade depth.
Keep the panel's role separate from the cushioning around the product. A completed carton can include both, but loose fill or an intermediate separator does not identify which component sits directly below the opening seam.
Specify the actual component
CP912 is listed as a 9 × 12 inch kraft chipboard pad, supplied in cases of 825. Its product description specifically identifies carton-top reinforcement and protection against box-cutter damage as intended uses. It does not provide an allowed blade penetration, a cutting-force rating or a guarantee against every opening method.
Use the 9 × 12 inch footprint as a component dimension. It does not establish a fit for every carton carrying “9 × 12” in its name. Compare the pad with the actual interior and the opening arrangement in your chosen pack.
Show its position in the packing instruction

For a hypothetical shipment with a presentation carton inside the shipping box, photograph the inner pack with the top panel installed, then photograph the closed flaps. Keep both images in the packing record. A photograph of the finished exterior alone cannot show that the panel was included.
Keep the final packing step repeatable
Name CP912 on the component list and identify its installation as a step after the inner pack is complete. If the outer carton or opening method changes, review the panel position and coverage again. Include the intended removal sequence in the receiver's instructions.
