Floor-Tape Layout: Choose the Measurement Edge

Before applying floor tape to a measured layout, specify which part of the tape line defines the dimension: its inner edge, centerline or outer edge. A wide strip occupies real space. The same number on a drawing can produce different clear distances when the reference edge is left unstated.

T92100Y is yellow PVC tape and T92100BY is yellow/black PVC tape. Both are listed as 2 inches wide, 100 feet long and 60 mil thick, with a quantity unit of one per case. Choose color or striping according to the facility's approved plan; this guide assigns no regulatory meaning to either pattern.

Use an explicit reference for both parallel lines

For the outer-edge example, subtract the width of both strips: 48 − 2 − 2 = 44 inches of clear space. For centerlines 48 inches apart, each strip extends 1 inch into that distance, leaving 46 inches clear.

These figures describe two straight, parallel strips in a hypothetical plan. They are not required storage dimensions, walking widths, equipment clearances or an approved aisle design.

Put the edge convention on the layout

Mark the intended reference on the drawing rather than labeling the area only “48 inches.” Use wording such as “48 inches clear between inner tape edges” when that is what the approved layout requires. Record the tape width alongside the reference convention.

If the facility later chooses a different tape width, review the layout before using the same line positions. Keeping the centerlines fixed while increasing the strip width changes the clear space. Changing tape is therefore capable of changing the marked geometry even when the numbers on the old drawing remain untouched.

Check the proposed boundary before applying adhesive

Review the layout with the person responsible for approving the space and its intended use. Use a facility-approved drawing or mockup to make the reference edges understandable before cutting and applying material. Include any corners, intersections or interruptions that need a separate placement decision.

Keep that approval distinct from product selection. A tape sold for floor marking does not establish that a proposed boundary or location is suitable for a particular traffic pattern. Resolve the facility's actual layout requirements through its responsible process.

Confirm the tape and surface instructions separately

Review the exact product's application requirements for the actual surface and conditions before installation. The geometry calculation does not specify surface preparation, application temperature, removal method or resistance to particular equipment traffic.

The two product routes are T92100Y for the yellow tape and T92100BY for yellow/black. Record the selected SKU with the width, layout reference and approved location. Do not infer a safety rule from the color or stripe pattern.
