How to Seal Corrugated Boxes Properly

How to Seal Corrugated Boxes Properly

Use the H-seal method: apply tape along the center seam, then across both short edges on top and bottom. Standard 2" carton tape works for boxes under 25 lb; use 3" or reinforced filament tape for heavier cartons.

Frequently asked

What's the H-seal method?

Apply one strip along the center seam, then one strip across each short edge on both top and bottom — forming an H pattern on each face. It's the carrier-approved standard.

Is 2" or 3" tape better?

2" for standard ecommerce boxes (under 25 lb) — cheaper and faster. 3" for heavy cartons and freight since it covers the seam in a single pass.

Hot-melt or acrylic carton tape?

Hot-melt bonds faster and holds well in cold conditions. Acrylic stays clear longer and handles temperature swings better. Both work for box sealing.

When do I need water-activated (kraft) tape?

High-security shipments and branded unboxing — WAT bonds into corrugated fibers and is visually tamper-evident. It's pricier but harder to remove cleanly.
