Painting Surface Clearance Before Outer Padding

For an unframed painting, decide how the package keeps materials clear of the painted face before selecting its outside padding. “Wrap the artwork” leaves the location of that wrap unresolved. The purchase list should identify the support, cover panels and cushioning separately.

Start with the paint manufacturer's contact guidance

GOLDEN's guidance for unframed paintings describes cardboard corners and optional rails that hold a cover away from the painted surface. It explains that acrylic paint can soften with warmth and packaging can stick or leave its texture behind. Its approach also keeps supports clear of painted edges. The article concerns temporary transport packaging and explicitly cautions against storing paintings in those materials.

Use the artist's or paint manufacturer's instructions for the actual work. A panel that supports an outer cover and a sheet placed directly against paint have different contact roles. The generic materials below are not presented as approved paint-contact materials.

Draw the contact locations before ordering

Make a simple side-view drawing with the painting, its approved support arrangement, cover panel and outside cushioning labeled. Mark every position where a material is intended to touch the assembly. Add a separate note for the painted edges when the image extends around the stretcher.

Have the person responsible for the artwork review that drawing. Give purchasing the accepted component positions along with the material names. This prevents a later request for “more foam” from silently becoming a new instruction to place foam against the face.

Buy panels and padding as separate components

These products provide purchasing examples for a proposed outer panel and separate padding layer. They are not a matched artwork kit. Their equal nominal footprint does not establish the dimensions of the finished support assembly, panel deflection or an approved shipping load. Neither listing establishes archival quality or compatibility with a particular paint or varnish.

Preserve the approved assembly through handoff

Keep a photograph and component list with the finished packing instruction. Identify which parts the recipient removes first and retain the artwork owner's handling directions with that record. If the painting's frame, coating or edge treatment changes, return the drawing for review instead of treating it as the same packing job.
