Shipping an Assembled Item or a Customer-Assembly Kit
Decide whether the product should arrive assembled before choosing a smaller carton for its separate components. Packing an approved assembly as a kit changes the receiver's job as well as the shape of the shipment. A compact arrangement is useful only when the product may be supplied that way and the recipient can complete the intended assembly.
Establish which shipping states are allowed
Start with the product owner's instructions. Identify whether the item must arrive ready to use, may be assembled by its recipient, or requires a qualified installer. Do not separate a bonded, adjusted or otherwise finished assembly merely to make a carton candidate work. Packaging selection does not authorize a product modification.
For a hypothetical desk organizer designed to be supplied either assembled or as a kit, record both permitted versions. One contains the finished organizer. The other contains its panels, approved fittings and assembly instructions. These are illustrative goods, not a tested application for a Packrift carton.
Compare complete jobs, not empty space

Include any tools that the product program promises to supply. If tools are not included, make the recipient requirement clear through the product's approved instructions. An unmentioned assembly task is not resolved by adding a loose hardware bag at dispatch.
Give each state its own packing record
Build the actual arrangement for each approved route. A kit may introduce separate edges, finishes and small fittings that were held in place in the assembled product. Record how those components remain identified and supported. Do not transfer the assembled product's protection approval automatically to the kit.
Have the packing instruction distinguish a missing component from an intentionally absent assembled feature. In the organizer example, panels waiting to be joined are correct for the kit version but incomplete for a ready-to-use order. The selected shipping state should appear on the job record before packing starts.
Select the carton after choosing the state
SKU 995 is a 9 × 9 × 5 inch kraft corrugated box, listed with ECT-32 board details and supplied as 25 per bundle. It is a carton candidate to compare with the completed packing arrangement. Those facts do not establish that either example organizer fits or that the carton has a particular payload capacity.
Use the bagged-parts and outer-box guide once the kit configuration is fixed. Keep any measured space, material or labor differences with the two complete methods; do not promise savings from the idea of disassembly alone. Keep the selected carton attached to the shipping state that the customer will actually receive.
Questions to ask before buying
Does a smaller component pack justify shipping the product unassembled?
Only after the product program permits that state and the recipient's assembly requirements are clear. Then compare the complete packing methods.
Can the assembled product's carton approval cover its kit version?
Do not assume it does. Separate components introduce their own identification, support and protection requirements.
