Tape Roll Length: Yards, Feet, Metres and Case Quantities

A tape roll's length and a case's roll count are separate numbers. Both products below contain 55 yards per roll, but T901516PK comes in a six-roll case and T901131 comes in a 36-roll case. Comparing “one case” without converting it to total length would hide a sixfold quantity difference.

Use this guide to convert yards, feet, and metres, then calculate a whole-case order from your measured tape use. Choose the appropriate tape specification separately; matching length does not make different adhesives interchangeable.

Convert the length of one roll

One yard equals 3 feet or 0.9144 metre. A 55-yard roll therefore contains 165 feet, 1,980 inches, or 50.292 metres of nominal tape length. Keep the full conversion during calculations and round the final purchasing quantity up to whole rolls and cases.

The case-length formula is roll length × rolls per case. Width does not enter that linear-length calculation. Both products happen to be listed as 2 inches wide; a wider tape would cover more surface area per yard, but it would not contain more linear yards for that reason.

Measure tape use for your actual closure pattern

Record every strip used on a completed carton, including tape on both ends if the process calls for it. Add the strip lengths to obtain tape consumed per carton. Use more than one measured example when the job includes different carton sizes or closure patterns.

Keep setup waste and unusable remnants separate from the basic strip calculation. Those amounts depend on the process. A roll-length calculation cannot establish how much tape the carton needs or whether the selected closure pattern is suitable.

Worked example: 600 cartons at a measured 42 inches each

In this hypothetical job, the approved process consumes a total of 42 inches per carton. The basic requirement is 600 × 42 = 25,200 inches. Divide by 36 to obtain 700 yards, then divide by 55 to obtain 12.73 rolls. The initial whole-roll requirement is 13.

A second check accounts for complete sets of strips: 1,980 inches per roll ÷ 42 inches per carton allows 47 complete carton allocations per roll, with 6 inches remaining. Thirteen rolls provide 611 such allocations. This arithmetic excludes setup losses and assumes the required strips can be cut from those allocations.

For T901516PK, 13 rolls require three six-roll cases: 18 rolls and 990 yards total. For T901131, one 36-roll case supplies 1,980 yards. These are quantity comparisons for two candidate specifications; they are not a recommendation to substitute one adhesive for the other.

Separate theoretical coverage from purchasing allowances

Add any allowance from your own process measurements before rounding to cases. For example, a chosen 10% allowance on the 700-yard requirement adds 70 yards, giving 770 yards or exactly 14 nominal rolls. That still rounds to three six-roll cases or one 36-roll case. Ten percent is an illustrative planning choice, not a standard waste rate.

When comparing quotations, divide the quoted case amount by 330 yards for T901516PK or by 1,980 yards for T901131. Retain the full case amount alongside the per-yard figure so the comparison shows both unit cost and the quantity being bought.
