Urethane-Acrylic or Polyethylene-Rubber Foam Mounting Tape

When two foam mounting tapes have the same nominal thickness, compare the foam carrier and the adhesive separately. “Foam tape” does not identify either one fully. For 3M 4016 and 4466, a same-size reorder can change both the cell structure and the adhesive family.

These common roll dimensions make the construction difference especially easy to miss on a purchase order. Record the product number and both material fields instead of approving a replacement by width, length and thickness alone.

Review the adhesive against the mounting surfaces

3M describes 4016 as an open-cell urethane foam tape with acrylic Adhesive 100, used for mounting where the tape is protected from the environment. See the manufacturer’s 4016 construction and application description; the manufacturer page’s roll size differs from Packrift’s roll.

For 4466, 3M identifies a closed-cell polyethylene carrier with rubber Adhesive 745. Its technical sheet describes indoor mounting and joining, including polyethylene and polypropylene surfaces, with moderate temperature and shear requirements. It does not recommend these rubber-adhesive versions for direct UV exposure. See the 4462/4466 technical sheet.

The carrier name describes the tape’s internal foam. It does not identify the material of the parts being joined. Write those parts separately: for example, a plastic bracket and a finished panel. This prevents “polyethylene foam” from being mistaken for a complete statement of substrate compatibility.

Make a substitution review specific

For a hypothetical interior display, record the bracket material, panel finish, location of the bond and expected exposure. If someone proposes a same-thickness replacement, compare the foam and adhesive against that record. An indoor mounting decision should not silently become approval for an exposed outdoor installation.

Keep the technical review focused on the complete joint. The open-cell or closed-cell label alone does not establish a waterproof seal, allowable hanging weight, installed compression or service life. Those are separate assembly requirements, and the product descriptions do not supply a universal value for them.

Separate material selection from installed dimensions

Once a construction is selected, retain its exact product number with the mounting drawing and review record. If the remaining question is the finished distance between parts, use the foam-tape mounting-dimension guide. That dimensional decision follows the material choice; it does not replace it.
