Carton-sealing tape: match the adhesive to the box
Tape choice comes down to adhesive type and box weight. Acrylic (water-clear) tape is the general-purpose consumable for light-to-medium boxes; it holds across a wide temperature range and stays clear over time, which is why most pack stations standardize on it. Hot-melt tape has a stronger initial grab and higher holding power, making it the better pick for heavier boxes and high-throughput benches. Reinforced (fiberglass or gummed kraft) tape is for heavy, overstuffed, or export cartons where the closure has to carry real load. Whatever you choose, an H-tape closure — one strip down the center seam and one across each edge seam — is the standard for anything heavy. Standardizing on one or two tapes keeps your dispensers and process consistent and lets you buy in bulk.
Void fill and cushioning: immobilize, don't just fill
Void fill exists to stop the product from moving and to absorb shock, not merely to occupy empty space. Match the fill to the load: kraft paper and crumpled paper for general goods and interleaving, air pillows for lightweight void volume, foam and bubble for fragile or edge-sensitive items, and loose fill for irregular shapes. Fragile and heavy items need cushioning that suspends them off all six walls of the box; light, durable items usually need only enough fill to keep them from shifting. Under-filling causes transit damage; over-filling wastes material and raises the box's dimensional weight, which carriers bill on.
Stretch film: unitize the pallet
Stretch film secures cartons into a single stable unit for palletized shipping and storage. Two things drive the choice: gauge (thickness) and application method. Heavier, denser, or sharp-cornered loads need a higher gauge; light, uniform loads can run thinner film. Hand film is for low-to-moderate pallet volume; machine film is engineered for a stretch wrapper and pays off at higher throughput. Wrap from the base up, anchor the load to the pallet, and overlap each pass so the unit can't shift or telescope in transit. Labels: print clean, scan first time
Shipping labels split into thermal and laser/inkjet. Direct-thermal labels print without ribbon and are the standard for carrier and barcode labels at a shipping bench; they're fast and cheap per label but fade with heat and light over long storage. Thermal-transfer and laser labels last longer and suit labels that need to survive warehousing. Whatever the format, the priority is a crisp barcode that scans on the first pass — pick a label size and adhesive rated for your printer and your box surface. How to build a repeatable pack station
Seal. Standardize on one or two carton-sealing tapes — acrylic for light-to-medium boxes, hot-melt or reinforced for heavy ones — and one closure method (H-tape for anything heavy). One consistent tape and dispenser setup is faster than switching between adhesives per order.
Fill. Choose void fill by fragility. Non-fragile items in a right-sized box need only kraft paper or modest fill to stop movement; fragile, angular, or heavy items need cushioning that holds them off the walls. Keep two fill types on the bench — one general, one protective — rather than one compromise material.
Wrap. For pallets, unitize with stretch film matched to load weight and volume; use hand film for low volume and machine film once a wrapper is worth it.
Label. Print carrier and barcode labels on thermal shipping labels sized for your printer, and confirm the barcode scans before the box leaves the bench. For metal or corrosion-prone parts, add VCI packaging inside the box; for soft goods, bundle in poly bags or ship in poly mailers.
