How VCI packaging works

VCI stands for volatile corrosion inhibitor, also called a vapor phase corrosion inhibitor. Treated paper, film or foam releases a vapor that spreads through a closed package and condenses on metal as a thin protective layer. When the package is opened, the vapor disperses. Zerust, a VCI maker, says the protection does not alter the metal surface and that parts need no cleaning or degreasing when they come out. The listings here describe VCI as a way to ship metal parts without oil or grease.

Match the product to the metal

Most VCI paper here is listed for ferrous metal parts. The multi-metal paper rolls are listed for ferrous, non-ferrous and combination metals, and the VCI foam carries multi-metal inhibitor chemistry. Silver Saver paper and bags are bleached kraft treated for precious metals such as silver and gold, listed for up to 2 years of protection.

Bags, paper or film

Bags hold parts that fit inside one. The flat and reclosable bags are 4 mil, from 3 x 5 in to 24 x 36 in, and the gusseted bags run from 14 x 10 x 25 in to 54 x 44 x 96 in for larger parts. The VCI paper listings name wrapping parts, lining cartons and filling voids as uses, and recommend 1 sq ft of paper per cubic foot of package space. Poly tubing is heat sealable and cuts to length for custom bags. Stretch film wraps irregular parts, and the 4 mil poly sheeting is listed for up to 12 months of protection indoors and 6 months outdoors.

Paper weight and finish

Listed basis weights for the paper rolls are 30, 35 and 60 lb, plain or waxed, in widths from 12 to 48 in. The MIL spec roll is listed as MIL-PRF-3420H and nitrate free. Sheets run from 8 x 8 in to 40 x 48 in, and 1 x 1 in chips fill voids.

Buying by the case

Each price is for one case. Flat and reclosable bags up to 9 x 12 in come 1,000 to a case and larger ones 250 or 100. Gusseted bags come 250 down to 20 a case, and Silver Saver bags 250. Rolls come one to a case, except the hand stretch film at four. Sheets come 1,000, 500 or 200 to a case, the chips 25,000 and the foam pieces 250.

Volume pricing applies at checkout: 3% off orders of 3 or more items and 5% off orders of 6 or more. Orders of one or two items get free ground shipping in the US at $99 or more when the checkout shipping charge is $29.95 or less. Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $120 or less. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping.
