Poly Bag Size Chart

Updated August 22, 2026Flat, reclosable, gussetedInches and cm

Poly bag sizes from 2 x 3 to 36 x 48 inches with metric equivalents, the mil thicknesses stocked in each size, a gusseted bag chart, and the fit rule that turns an item measurement into a bag size.

Parts sorting and repeat-access kits

Choose the bag style before the mil thickness

For small parts that need repeated access, compare a reclosable bag such as green PB3585G: 5 × 8 in, 2 mil, with a zipper. PB2269 is a different format: a clear 7 × 16 in, 1 mil open-ended flat bag that needs a separate closure. It is a taller alternative for a different packing need, not an exact substitute.

01

Choose repeated access

PB3585G has a reclosable zipper and green film for a bagging workflow that benefits from a color distinction.

Before choosing: The green color is not an antistatic or electronics-protection claim.
02

Choose a taller clear bag

PB2269 is a 7 × 16 in open-ended bag with 1 mil film. A separate closure becomes part of the packing process.

Before choosing: It changes size, film thickness, color and closure at once; it is not a like-for-like replacement.
03

Choose after a handling check

Use the loaded bag to evaluate fit, closure and the effect of the parts’ edges during your actual process.

Before choosing: Mil describes film thickness. It does not by itself establish a safe weight, puncture rating or suitability for sharp parts.

What does mil tell me about a parts bag?

A mil is one-thousandth of an inch. PB3585G lists 2 mil film and PB2269 lists 1 mil film. That describes thickness, not a tested load limit or a guarantee against punctures. Consider the parts’ shape, edges, weight and handling as well.

Are these two bags interchangeable?

No. PB3585G is green, 5 × 8 in, 2 mil and reclosable. PB2269 is clear, 7 × 16 in, 1 mil and open-ended. Match the dimensions, thickness, closure and case quantity before changing a bag already used in your process.

How do I close the open-ended bag?

PB2269 needs a separate closure. Its product information lists twist ties, bag tape or an impulse sealer as closing options. Choose the method that works with your contents and packing process; it does not have the zipper supplied on PB3585G.

Can I use color alone to choose an electronics or food-contact bag?

No. Color and film thickness do not establish those requirements. Check the exact product’s applicable specifications and your intended use rather than inferring special protection or suitability from this comparison.

How do I compare the order cost?

Both listings contain 1,000 bags per case, but they serve different needs. Check each exact SKU’s current price and ZIP estimator, then confirm shipping, tax and total at checkout. Do not choose a different closure or thickness only because an item price is lower.

Matching an existing packing process?
Keep the approved SKU, dimensions, mil thickness and closure together in your reorder notes.

How poly bag sizes are written

Poly bags are sold by flat width x length in inches, measured on the outside of the bag with the opening on the short side. A 9 x 12 bag is 9 inches across the opening and 12 inches deep. Gusseted bags add a third number for the depth of the fold: 12 x 8 x 24 is 12 wide, 8 deep when opened, 24 long. Thickness is a separate spec in mil (thousandths of an inch); the mil to micron chart converts it. Reclosable bags usually measure the usable area below the zipper, so a 9 x 12 reclosable bag is slightly shorter inside than a 9 x 12 flat bag.

Fit rule: bag width = item width + item thickness + 1 in. Bag length = item length + item thickness + 2 in. For a cylinder, width = half the circumference + 1 in. Round up to the next stocked size.

Poly bag size chart: flat and reclosable bags

Every size below is stocked in the mils listed, and each mil links to a product in that size. 1 to 1.5 mil suits soft, light goods; 2 mil is the general-purpose thickness; 3 to 4 mil handles parts with edges; 6 mil and up is for sharp, heavy or outdoor-stored contents. The 2 vs 4 vs 6 mil comparison goes through the trade-offs.

Gusseted poly bag sizes

Gusseted bags open into a rectangle, so they line boxes and bins and wrap cartons without corners tearing. Pick the width and depth to match the container's inside dimensions plus an inch each, and the length to cover the height plus enough to fold over or tie off.

Choosing between flat, reclosable and gusseted

  • Flat bags are the cheapest per unit and seal on a heat sealer, tape, or a twist tie. Use them for anything that is packed once and not reopened.
  • Reclosable (zipper) bags cost more per bag but need no sealer and are reopened by the customer. Standard for parts kits, samples, small retail items and anything with a white write-on block.
  • Gusseted bags hold volume. Use them for cartons, bins, produce, bread, and any item thicker than about 3 inches where a flat bag would strain at the corners.
  • Poly tubing is the answer for odd lengths: cut and seal both ends to make any bag length from one roll. See poly tubing.

Most brands carry three or four sizes that cover 90 percent of SKUs; a common apparel set is 6 x 9, 9 x 12, 12 x 15 and 14 x 20. Going bigger than needed adds dimensional weight in the master carton and lets items shift during sortation. For the sister chart on mailers, see the mailer size chart; for boxes, the box size chart and box sizes in cm.

Frequently asked questions

What size poly bag do I need for a T-shirt?

A folded adult T-shirt is about 8 x 10 inches, so a 9 x 12 bag is the minimum and 10 x 13 gives room for the fold. Hoodies and sweatshirts move up to 12 x 15 or 12 x 16.

How are poly bag sizes measured?

Width x length in inches on the outside of the flat bag, opening on the width side. Gusseted bags are width x depth x length. Thickness is listed separately in mil.

What is the most common poly bag size?

9 x 12 and 12 x 15 for apparel and documents, 4 x 6 and 6 x 9 for parts and small goods. 2 mil is the most common thickness across all of them.

Should I size up a poly bag?

Add 1 inch to the width and 2 inches to the length over the item, plus the item's thickness on each dimension. More than that and the bag wrinkles, traps air and costs dimensional weight in the master carton.

What poly bag size fits a 9 x 12 document?

A 10 x 13 bag. A 9 x 12 bag is exactly the paper size and will not close over it without bending the corners.
