Decision rule
If the team already uses office laser printers and prints in batches, start with laser labels. If the line prints labels continuously from shipping software, start with thermal.
Durability rule
Direct thermal is efficient but heat-sensitive. Thermal transfer adds ribbon complexity but improves durability. Weather-resistant polyester laser labels solve a different problem: sheet-based durable labels.
Avoid
Do not buy laser labels for a thermal printer, and do not buy direct thermal labels for a laser printer.
