Thermal vs laser labels

Direct thermal labels print with heat alone. The facestock has a heat-sensitive coating, so the printhead darkens the label directly and there is no ink, toner, or ribbon to buy or change. The tradeoff is permanence: direct thermal print fades under prolonged heat, sunlight, or abrasion. How to choose a label size

Start from the printer and the job, not the label. If a carrier platform generates the label, use 4x6 direct thermal on rolls or fanfold. Either way, the label has to sit flat on one face of the carton; a label that wraps an edge or crosses a seam is the usual reason a barcode fails to scan.
