Edge Protector Size Chart: Corner Board Leg, Length and Caliper for Pallets
Corner boards are sized by leg width, length and caliper: a 2 x 2 x 48 in board in 0.120 to 0.160 in caliper is the standard protector for a stretch-wrapped pallet, and 0.225 in and up is the grade for steel strapping and double stacking. The chart lists every stocked edge protector by size and duty class, how many a pallet needs, and how to match length to load height.
Stocked edge protectors
An edge protector, corner board or angle board is an L-shaped strip of laminated paperboard placed on the vertical corners of a palletized load before stretch wrapping or strapping. It stops strap tension from crushing box corners, squares the load so film pulls the columns together instead of into the boxes, and takes the forklift and dock-plate contact that otherwise dents the bottom tier. Sizes read leg by leg by length, then the caliper in thousandths of an inch.

Length is chosen from the load height: a 48 inch protector suits the common 48 to 50 inch load, 36 and 40 inch pieces suit half-height and mixed loads, and 30 inch pieces suit the top tier of a double stack. Cutting 48 inch boards to shorter lengths works but wastes board; ordering the stocked shorter length is cheaper per pallet. Leg width
A 2 inch leg is the general-purpose width and fits under most stretch film and strap widths. A 2.5 or 3 inch leg is used with wider steel strapping, on heavy or soft-sided loads (bags, bales) where the board must bridge more surface, and on tall loads that need extra stiffness. Legs narrower than 2 inches are for boxes and small bundles rather than pallets.
Placing edge protectors
- Square the load first. Boards on a leaning stack lock the lean in.
- Set boards on all four vertical corners, bottom end resting on the pallet deck, not overhanging it.
- Hold with one wrap of film or a hand strap before tensioning; a board that slides during wrapping ends up angled.
- Tension strapping over the board, never over bare boxes, and keep steel strap on heavy-caliper board only.
- Add horizontal boards under any strap that crosses the top of the load.

What does the caliper number on a corner board mean?
