Hearing Protection

NRR, or Noise Reduction Rating, is the rated noise reduction of the hearing protector in decibels under laboratory conditions. Real-world protection is typically lower due to fit variability and improper insertion. OSHA recommends applying a 50% derating factor to the NRR to estimate actual field attenuation. An NRR 33 earplug provides approximately 16 decibels of real-world protection under this derating approach.

Ear plugs generally provide higher NRR ratings and are less obstructive for workers wearing other head and face PPE. Earmuffs are faster to put on and take off, making them better for environments where hearing protection is worn intermittently throughout the shift. Both formats meet OSHA requirements when properly selected for the noise exposure level present.

Corded ear plugs attach the two plugs with a cord that keeps them around the neck when not in use, eliminating the problem of lost or contaminated plugs in dirty environments. Banded hearing protectors insert into the ear canal from the front using a rigid band, allowing faster insertion and removal than standard ear plugs for workers who move frequently between high-noise and normal areas throughout the shift.
