How to choose a box stapler
Manual or pneumatic
Manual stick feed staplers need no compressed air and hold 150 staples. Their listings name them for low volume carton sealing. Pneumatic roll feed staplers need at least 80 PSI of air and load a roll of 1,000 staples, listed at up to 250 cartons per roll, for high volume packing lines. Both types come in 5/8 and 3/4 inch.
Match the staples to the stapler
Each carton stapler takes staples of its own length and feed. The 5/8 inch stick feed stapler takes 5/8 inch stick staples, and the 3/4 inch roll feed stapler takes 3/4 inch staple rolls. Every carton staple here has a 1 1/4 inch crown, the width known as C crown. The sticks hold 50 staples and the rolls hold 1,000.
Pick the staple length
Published guidance for standard C flute corrugated board puts 1/2 to 3/4 inch legs on single wall boxes and 3/4 or 7/8 inch legs on double wall boxes. The carton staples here come 5/8 and 3/4 inch long, and the manual staplers have adjustable penetration for different carton thicknesses. The flute types chart shows how thick each board is.
Hand staplers and stapling hammers
For light cartons, bags, tags and labels, the hand staplers and the stapling hammer use shorter staples. The plier stapler takes 1/4 or 5/16 inch staples, the industrial hand stapler 1/4 or 3/8 inch, and the stapling hammer 1/4 inch. Each case of staples lists the tool it fits.

Buying staples by the case
Staplers are priced each. Staples are priced per case, with the price per staple beside it. Carton staples come 20,000 to a case as 400 sticks of 50, or 24,000 to a case as 24 rolls of 1,000. The hand stapler and stapling hammer staples in the table come 5,000 to a case.
Volume pricing applies at checkout: 3% off orders of 3 or more items and 5% off orders of 6 or more. Staplers and cases of staples count together. Orders of one or two items get free ground shipping in the US at $99 or more when the checkout shipping charge is $29.95 or less. How do I know what size staples my stapler takes?
