How to choose a cello bag
Self-seal or flat
Self-seal bags have an adhesive strip on the flap. Peel off the liner, fold the flap over and press. The strip is resealable, so the bag can be opened and closed again without a sealer. Every self-seal size comes 1,000 to a case, from 2 x 3 in to 20 x 24 in.
Flat bags are open at the top. Close them with a hand crimper sealer, an impulse sealer or twist ties. Flat 1.5 mil bags up to 5 x 7 in come 5,000 or 10,000 to a case, and at most sizes stocked in both styles the flat bag costs less per bag.
Thickness
A mil is one thousandth of an inch, so a 1.5 mil wall is 0.0015 in, or 38.1 microns. The 3 mil bags use twice the film. A case of 1,000 bags at 4 x 6 in weighs 5.02 lb in 3 mil. A case of 5,000 flat 1.5 mil bags at the same size weighs 12 lb, or 2.4 lb per 1,000. The 3 mil bags come in 3 x 5 1/2, 4 x 6, 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 and 8 x 10 in.
Size
Sizes are width by length in inches. A flat bag has no gusset, so a thick item uses up part of both dimensions as the film wraps around it. Add the item's thickness to its width and to its length, then leave room to close the bag. A 5 x 7 in card that is 1/8 in thick needs at least 5 1/8 x 7 1/8 in. The 5 3/4 x 7 3/4 in flat bag or the 6 x 9 in self-seal bag fits it.
Polypropylene or polyethylene
Every bag on this page is polypropylene. Most poly bags are polyethylene.

Choose polypropylene when the product has to show through the bag. Packrift lists these bags for candy, snacks and baked goods, retail items and small parts. Choose polyethylene for freezer storage and for items that need a softer bag. Polyethylene bags are in Poly Bags.

- Every price is for one case. Case counts run from 500 to 10,000 bags, so compare sizes by price per bag. The case weight column helps plan freight.
- Volume pricing comes off in the cart: 3% at 3 or more items and 5% at 6 or more, counted across the whole cart. Some sizes carry a higher rate, and the cart shows it.
- Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $120 or less. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. Orders of one or two items get free ground shipping in the US at $99 or more when the checkout shipping charge is $29.95 or less.

Common questions
What is the difference between cello and poly bags?
Cello bags here are polypropylene. Most poly bags are polyethylene. Oriented polypropylene film is crystal clear and stiffer. Polyethylene runs from almost clear to milky and is softer, and very low density grades are used for frozen food bags.
Is cellophane the same as polypropylene?
No. Cellophane is a film made from regenerated cellulose. In the US the word is used loosely for many clear plastic films, which is why clear polypropylene bags are sold as cello bags.
What are the downsides of polypropylene?
It turns brittle below 0 °C, so it is a poor fit for freezer storage. It is also stiffer than polyethylene, so it does not conform to odd shapes as easily.
How do I seal a flat cello bag?
Use a heat sealer or a hand crimper sealer for a closed seal, or fold the top and close it with a twist tie or tape.
Are these cello bags food safe?
Every listing on this page says the film meets FDA and USDA specifications for food contact and resists moisture, grease and vapor. Check the exact size on its product page before use with food.
How much do polypropylene bags cost?
