Business envelope sizes

Business envelopes, also called commercial envelopes, open on the long side and carry folded letters, invoices and statements. The number is a trade size, not a measurement.

USPS letter, flat and parcel size limits

USPS prices an envelope by its shape. A letter is 3 1/2 to 6 1/8 inches high, 5 to 11 1/2 inches long and no more than 1/4 inch thick. A flat, which USPS also calls a large envelope, can be up to 12 inches high, 15 inches long and 3/4 inch thick, and must be flexible and uniformly thick. Anything larger, thicker or rigid mails as a parcel.

  • A #10 and a 6 x 9 envelope mail as letters when they are 1/4 inch thick or less.
  • 9 x 12, 9 1/2 x 12 1/2, 10 x 13, 11 1/2 x 14 1/2 and 10 x 15 envelopes mail as flats.
  • A 12 x 15 1/2 envelope is longer than 15 inches, so it mails as a parcel even when it holds a few sheets.
  • Square envelopes and lumpy contents such as keys or pens can trigger the nonmachinable surcharge on letters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard envelope size?

The #10 business envelope, 4 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches, is the standard size for letters folded in thirds. For unfolded documents the standard is the 9 x 12 inch catalog envelope.

What size envelope fits 8 1/2 x 11 paper without folding?

A 9 x 12 inch envelope. Use 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 for a thicker stack and 10 x 13 for a pocket folder or more than about half an inch of paper.

What size envelope for a 5 x 7 card?

An A7 envelope, 5 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, which leaves about 1/8 inch of clearance on each side.

What size is a #10 envelope in mm?

About 105 x 241 mm. In inches it is 4 1/8 x 9 1/2.

Is a 9 x 12 envelope a letter or a flat?

A flat. USPS letters max out at 6 1/8 x 11 1/2 inches, so a 9 x 12 envelope mails at the large envelope price up to 3/4 inch thick.

How are envelope sizes measured?

Height by length, short side first, measured on the closed envelope. A 6 x 9 envelope is 6 inches high and 9 inches long.

What is the difference between catalog and booklet envelopes?

Catalog envelopes open on the short end and booklet envelopes open on the long side. Booklet envelopes run through inserting machines; catalog envelopes hold contents more securely in the mail.

What envelope fits A4 paper?

C4, 229 x 324 mm, for A4 flat. In US sizes, a 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 or 10 x 13 inch envelope also fits an unfolded A4 sheet.
