How to Remove Double-Sided Tape From Walls, Glass and Metal

Updated October 28, 20264 stepsBy surface

To remove double-sided tape, warm it with a hair dryer to soften the adhesive, then saw through it with dental floss or string, or peel it back slowly. Rub off the leftover adhesive with a finger or a fresh piece of tape, and clean the rest with a citrus-based cleaner, testing it on a hidden spot first. Foam mounting tape is designed to be permanent, so on painted drywall there is always some risk to the paint, and VHB tape on metal or glass comes off by cutting through the foam.

How to remove double-sided tape in 4 steps

  1. Warm it. Run a hair dryer over the tape for a minute to soften the adhesive. A heat gun works faster, but only on parts that can take the heat.
  2. Cut through it. Slide dental floss or string behind the tape and saw back and forth through the foam, which on mounting tape is only about 0.045 inch thick. On thin film tape, peel it back slowly instead.
  3. Roll off the residue. Rub the leftover adhesive with a finger, or dab it with a fresh piece of tape to lift it.
  4. Clean what is left. Use a citrus-based cleaner or adhesive remover, let it soak in, wipe it off with a cloth and rinse with water. Test the cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Avoid scraping or sanding on paint: 3M warns that mechanical removal puts most painted surfaces at risk, whatever the finish.

Removing it from different surfaces

What to use on each surface
Surface Removal Watch for
Painted walls Hair dryer, then floss or string and a slow peel Mounting tape is meant to be permanent; weak, old or uncured paint can lift with it
Wallpaper and delicate finishes Warm it and work very slowly 3M recommends none of its mounting tapes for these surfaces
Metal and glass Cut through the foam with wire, a fine-tooth saw or an oscillating tool Wet the bond edge with isopropyl alcohol so the cut does not re-stick
Car paint and trim Gentle heat, then cut through the foam Some residue tools that are safe on enamel and urethane paint damage lacquer finishes

Removing VHB tape

VHB tape is built to bond permanently, so 3M's removal method cuts the bond rather than pulling it. Wet the edge of the bond with isopropyl alcohol, which lubricates the blade and keeps the cut foam from sticking back together, then cut through the tape with an oscillating tool, 1/8 to 1/4 inch deeper on each pass. For small parts, a fine-tooth saw blade or a textured wire lubricated with liquid soap does the same job. Scrape off the bulk of the foam, then spray an adhesive remover on what is left, let it soak, scrub and wipe it clean.

Expect residue on both surfaces once they come apart. For stubborn residue, 3M's bulletin suggests wetting it with solvent, covering it with plastic film for 5 to 15 minutes, then scraping. A heat gun helps where the parts can take the heat.

How to get double-sided tape residue off

Start with heat and friction before any solvent: warm the residue with a hair dryer, then roll it off with a finger or lift it with a fresh piece of tape. Most of it comes away that way. For what is left, a citrus-based cleaner or an adhesive remover dissolves the adhesive; wipe with a soft cloth, then rinse with water so no cleaner film is left behind. Industrial citrus cleaners are often made for metal equipment and are flammable, so read the label before using one on a wall.

How to mount things so the tape comes off cleanly next time

  • Pick a removable tape for anything you will take down later. Even removable mounting squares warn against flat paint and say removal may damage some surfaces, so test first.
  • Let new paint cure at least 7 days before mounting anything on it.
  • Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, which removes dust and oil and evaporates without leaving a film. For VHB, 3M's current guidance is a 70/30 wipe of isopropyl alcohol and water.
  • Apply in the right temperature range, ideally 70 to 100°F and not below 50°F, and press firmly. VHB needs about 15 psi and reaches 50 percent of its strength in 20 minutes, 90 percent in 24 hours and full strength in 72 hours.
  • Remember that foam bonds grow stronger. 3M says the bond of its 4004 foam tape increases with age, so a mount that has been up for years is harder to remove than one put up last month.

Double-sided tape by the case

Packrift stocks double-sided foam, film and VHB tapes, including removable double-sided PE foam tape for mounting that has to come off later, 3M 4466 double-sided PE foam tape, 3M 4016 double-sided foam tape, and VHB tapes such as 3M 4905 clear VHB tape for permanent bonds, with every grade on the 3M VHB tape page. The double-sided tape collection lists every width, thickness and case count.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove double-sided tape from a wall without damaging paint?

Warm it with a hair dryer, saw through it with dental floss or string, and rub off the leftover adhesive with a finger or a fresh piece of tape. Avoid scraping, and test any cleaner on a hidden spot. Weak, old or uncured paint can still lift, since mounting tape is made to be permanent.

What removes sticky residue from double-sided tape?

Warm it with a hair dryer, rub or lift it off with a fresh piece of tape, then use a citrus-based cleaner or adhesive remover and wipe it clean. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.

Does rubbing alcohol remove double-sided tape?

It is the standard surface cleaner before applying tape, and 3M uses it as a lubricant when cutting through VHB, but for leftover adhesive 3M points to citrus cleaners and adhesive removers. Warm the residue and rub it off first.

How do you remove VHB tape?

Cut through it rather than pulling: wet the bond edge with isopropyl alcohol, cut through the foam with an oscillating tool, a fine-tooth saw or a textured wire, then soak the residue with adhesive remover and wipe it off.

Can you reuse double-sided mounting tape?

Not reliably. Mounting adhesives are made for one application; 3M's Command strips, for example, are designed for one-time use. Rehang with a fresh piece.

Is there double-sided tape that comes off cleanly?

Yes. Removable double-sided tapes and mounting squares are made to release, though even removable squares warn against flat paint and say removal may damage some surfaces, so test them first.
