How to choose 4x6 thermal labels
Match the print method to the printer
Direct thermal labels are chemically treated to print when the print head heats them, so they need no ribbon. Thermal transfer labels need a ribbon, and Zebra says the ribbon must be as wide as the label or wider. To check unmarked stock, scratch the face firmly and quickly with a fingernail. A black mark means direct thermal. No mark means thermal transfer.
Match the roll to the printer's holder
The THD114 desktop rolls sit on a 1 inch core with a 4 inch outside diameter. The 4-roll thermal transfer cases sit on 3 inch cores. Zebra's GK420 desktop printers hold roll cores from 0.5 to 1.5 inches inside the printer, so a 3 inch core roll does not fit there. Mount it on an external roll stand and feed it through the rear slot, as Zebra advises for external rolls.
Roll or fanfold
Fanfold labels are folded zigzag into a flat stack. On a Zebra GK420t, the stack feeds through the slot at the back of the printer. THL576 has 2,000 white direct thermal labels per stack. The yellow THL577 case holds two stacks of 2,000. THL140 is a white thermal transfer fanfold, perforated between each label.
Compare price per roll
The roll cases in the tables at the top list rolls per case only, so compare price per roll between rolls of the same format: desktop with desktop, 3 inch core with 3 inch core. For an office laser printer, use 4x6 laser labels, 400 per case.

Buying by the case and pallet
Every price is for one case or pack. Volume pricing comes off at checkout: 3% at 3 or more items in the cart and 5% at 6 or more. Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $45 or less, or $90 or less on orders of $1,000 or more. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. For pallet quantities, a standing monthly order or a mix of SKUs, send the SKUs, case counts and delivery ZIP on a bulk quote. The quote prices freight for the whole order.
Common questions
Is 4x6 the standard shipping label size?
Yes for thermal printers. UPS WorldShip help says 4 x 6 inch thermal stock prints its standard shipment labels. Set the label size in your shipping software to 4 x 6 before you print.
Do direct thermal labels need a ribbon?
No. Direct thermal labels print from the heat of the print head. Thermal transfer labels need a ribbon at least as wide as the label.
Can I use direct thermal labels in a thermal transfer printer?
Yes, if the printer has a direct thermal mode. Zebra's GK420t, a thermal transfer model, lists both modes. Take the ribbon out first. Zebra says never to run direct thermal labels with a ribbon.
Will thermal transfer labels print in a direct thermal printer?
No. Zebra lists a ribbon as required for thermal transfer labels, and a direct thermal printer runs without one. Order the direct thermal rolls or fanfold for that printer.
Will a 3 inch core roll fit a desktop printer?
Not inside a Zebra GK420, which holds cores from 0.5 to 1.5 inches. Use the 1 inch core THD114 rolls there, or feed a 3 inch core roll from an external roll stand through the rear slot.
How many labels are in a case?
THL577 holds 4,000 labels in two fanfold stacks of 2,000. The 250-label and 1,000-label rolls state the count per roll. THD114, THL156, THL114 and the THL130 colors list rolls per case only. For a label count on those, ask on the bulk quote form.
Is 4x6 the same as 100 x 150 mm?
No. 4 x 6 inches is 101.6 x 152.4 mm. A 100 x 150 mm label measures about 3.94 x 5.91 inches, slightly smaller on both sides.
