How to choose trash can liners

Match the liner to the can

The liner width should be half the distance around the rim. For a round can, multiply the diameter by 3.14 and divide by 2. The length is the can height plus half the base diameter plus 3 to 4 inches of overhang. A round can 24 inches across and 31 inches tall takes a 40 x 46 liner.

For a square or rectangular can, add the four sides of the opening and divide by 2 for the width. The length is the height plus half the bottom width plus 3 to 4 inches.

Pick high density or low density

High density liners are thin and are rated in microns. They suit paper, towels, cups and other waste without sharp edges. Low density liners stretch before they puncture and are rated in mil. Use them for glass, metal, food waste, yard debris and anything with corners. One mil is 0.001 inch, or 25.4 microns, so a 0.47 mil high density liner is about 12 microns.

For wet, heavy or sharp loads, choose low density and a higher mil in the same size.

Common questions

What size trash bag fits a 55 gallon can or drum?

A 38 x 58 inch low density liner or a 38 x 60 inch high density liner. This page has low density and recycled content 38 x 58 liners from 1.4 to 2 mil in clear, black and blue, plus high density 38 x 58 and 38 x 60 liners at 0.55 and 0.67 mil. Some wide 55 gallon round cans take a 43 x 47 liner, so measure the rim first.

What size liner fits a 32 or 33 gallon can?

Most take a 33 x 39 or 33 x 40 inch liner. The low density liners in those sizes run 0.5 to 2 mil, and the high density 33 x 40 liners run 0.47 to 0.86 mil. Some wide 32 gallon round cans need a 40 x 46 liner.

Do they make 20 gallon trash bags?

Yes. The 30 x 36 and 30 x 37 inch liners are rated for 20 to 30 gallon cans. This page has them in 0.63 mil high density, 0.5 and 0.9 mil low density and 1.1 mil recycled content.

What are can liners made of?

Polyethylene. High density polyethylene, or HDPE, makes the thin liners rated in microns. Low density and linear low density polyethylene, LDPE and LLDPE, make the stretchier liners and the 3 mil contractor bags.

Is 1.5 or 2 mil thicker?

2 mil is 0.002 inch and 1.5 mil is 0.0015 inch, so 2 mil is thicker. Compare thickness within one resin, since high density liners are rated much thinner.

How many trash bags come in a case?

From 50 to 1,000 on this page. The thinnest liners, 0.23 to 0.4 mil, come 1,000 to a case, and most 1.5 to 3 mil liners come 100 to a case.
