Folding Carton Size Chart: Reverse Tuck and Chipboard Box Sizes

Folding cartons are quoted by inside size and board caliper: 24 pt reverse tuck cartons in kraft or white are the standard retail box for bottles, jars, tubes and small parts, and 36 pt is the heavy grade. The chart lists every stocked chipboard carton by size, style, board, color, case count and cost per carton, with starting sizes for common retail products.

Stocked folding cartons by size

A folding carton is a die-cut paperboard box that ships flat and folds up at the packing bench. Reverse tuck is the workhorse style: the top and bottom flaps tuck in from opposite sides so the carton locks without glue or tape. Sizes are quoted as inside length by width by depth, and the board is quoted in points, thousandths of an inch: 24 pt (0.024 in) is the standard retail caliper, 36 pt the heavy grade for weightier contents or stacked display. Kraft board is unbleached brown; white is clay coated for print.

Chipboard cartons are inner packaging: they present the product and protect it from scuffs, not from a drop. Ship them inside a corrugated box sized with the box size chart, and pack case counts of cartons in a box whose footprint holds a full layer, which the pallet count table extends to the pallet.

Ordering and printing

  1. Match the caliper to the weight. 24 pt holds up to roughly 8 oz comfortably; move to 36 pt above that or when cartons are stacked on a shelf.
  2. Kraft or white. Kraft takes a stamp or a label; white takes full print and reads as retail. Both accept the same label sizes.
  3. Check the erected size. The flat blank is larger than the folded carton; storage is by case, and cases are compact because cartons ship flat.
  4. Test the tuck. Erect three cartons from a new case and check the tucks lock; humidity swells board and a tight tuck tears.
  5. Label before erecting when possible; a flat blank labels faster and straighter than a folded box.
