What a case of packaging costs to ship
Each row aggregates live ground quotes for single case or bundle quantities of standard corrugated boxes, mailers, and protective packaging — door to door, dimensional-weight effects included. Medians, with the typical range (middle 50% of quotes) in parentheses.

The parcel-to-LTL crossover comes earlier than you think
The old rule of thumb says parcel until 150 lb. For packaging, that rule is broken by dimensional weight: corrugated is light for its size, so carriers bill a bundle of large boxes at a multiple of its scale weight. By 45–70 lb of actual weight, LTL already wins 22% of head-to-head quotes.
The oversize flip. A bundle of 36×22×22" double-wall boxes weighs under 30 lb on a scale — but once dimensional weight and oversize surcharges hit, parcel quotes ran around $400 against roughly $170 for LTL. The truck wins by more than 2×, at a weight most buyers would call small.
The other half of the story is the LTL minimum charge. Across every band we measured, the median LTL quote sat in a flat $171–$190 window, with typical quotes between $150 and $250. That floor is why consolidating packaging orders pays twice: the same minimum moves one case or ten.

The Midwest ships cheapest — dense warehouse coverage and short hauls. Both coasts pay a 13–16% premium on the same freight. If you operate bicoastally, that spread is a line item worth budgeting.
The expedited tax
On identical shipments, 2-day air quoted a median 3.2× the ground price, and next-day 6.8×. Packaging is bulky freight — air multiplies exactly the dimensional weight that already inflates it. Order a week ahead and keep the multiple.
Why freight decides packaging orders
In 73% of the shipments we quoted, freight came to at least half the price of the products themselves. In 43%, the freight quote met or exceeded the product price. Nobody budgets for that at the catalog page — the truth arrives at the shipping step, and it is why packaging carts die there.
Three practical moves fall straight out of the data:
- Compare landed cost, not sticker price. A cheaper case that ships from the wrong region loses.
- Consolidate to the LTL floor. The $150–$250 minimum moves one case or a stack — fill the truck you are already paying for.
- Watch dimensional weight on oversized SKUs. Anything past roughly 30" on a side deserves an LTL quote before you accept a parcel price.

Methodology
The Freight Reality Index aggregates live, door-to-door freight quotes generated by the freight-quoting engine behind packrift.com — the same engine that prices real shipments. The current edition draws on quotes collected in Q2 2026.
- Scope: standard corrugated boxes, mailers, and protective packaging in single case or bundle quantities.
- Lanes: a five-region US warehouse network to business addresses in ten US regions (one major metro per region).
- Modes: ground parcel plus regional and national LTL common carriers; expedited air quoted separately.
- Statistics: medians with interquartile ranges. The regional index is computed only on identical shipment baskets quoted to all ten regions, so regional differences are not an artifact of product mix.
Quotes are market prices at the time of collection, not negotiated contract rates, and include the dimensional-weight and accessorial effects a real buyer pays. The index is refreshed quarterly; the next edition lands in Q4 2026.
