What freight adds to a packaging order.
We recorded freight estimates for six exact products, three purchase quantities and three destination ZIP codes. The tables show the item subtotal, freight and estimated cost per physical item so you can compare an order on the same basis.

These are dated estimates, not checkout offers. Quantities mean bundles or cases, not individual boxes or bags. The physical-item count makes that difference explicit.

How the snapshot was assembled
- For each exact product, we requested freight at 1, 3 and 6 purchase units for Columbus 43215, Chicago 60601 and Los Angeles 90001 on September 7, 2026.
- For quantities 3 and 6, item subtotals use returned Shopify price calculations with the existing automatic discounts accepted. Those item calculations used a Columbus 43215 address. They did not create an order. We combined each returned item subtotal with the separately recorded ZIP-specific freight estimate.
- Total before tax equals the returned item subtotal plus the recorded freight estimate. Cost per physical item divides that total by purchase quantity × items per bundle or case. It is shown to four decimal places; checkout rounding may differ.
Limits: The combined totals are estimates assembled from separate observations, not 54 completed checkout calculations. Tax, address-specific receiving services, later price or discount changes and checkout adjustments are outside this snapshot. Confirm the current product, destination and final total before ordering. No scenario in this sample returned free shipping; that does not describe every Packrift order.

We have not verified the same multi-bundle cart, destination-specific freight, coupons, subscription discounts or final total. They do not establish a delivered-price comparison.

Paired actual weights range from 0.24 to 64.9 lb. “LTL cheaper” compares the lowest LTL and parcel estimate for each identical scenario. Cost per lb is the median of each scenario’s cheapest ground estimate divided by actual weight.
Two ways to use the benchmark
1. Start with parcel for a small order
In the 5–10 lb band, parcel was cheaper in all 176 paired scenarios. The parcel median was $30.79; the LTL median was $179.32. Their $148.53 difference describes the band medians, not a saving promised for your order.
For an order in this weight range, get a parcel estimate first. Check the actual dimensions and destination before choosing a service.
2. Compare both modes for a heavier order
In the 45–70 lb band, LTL was cheaper in 9 of 40 scenarios (22.5%). Parcel was cheaper in the other 31, even though the order was heavier. The band medians were $115.11 for parcel and $171.13 for LTL.
Request both prices for the same basket and ZIP. Add each freight quote to the product subtotal and compare the delivered totals. Include any liftgate, residential or other delivery requirements when requesting the quote.

Methodology and limits
Packrift calculated these aggregates from supplier freight-estimator exports collected May 7–10, 2026 UTC. Of 18,353 source rows, 18,333 had usable prices. We retained the latest record for each SKU, destination ZIP, quantity and service, then paired the lowest parcel and LTL estimate for each scenario. The result is 957 paired scenarios across 99 SKUs.
- Quantity and weight: estimator quantities represent individual items. We converted them to sellable packs using the historical pack size, and used the May 7 product weights and values for the calculations. Retained scenarios contain at least one sellable pack.
- Service grouping: U.P.S. Ground and Best Way - U.P.S. Ground form the parcel group. UPS 2nd Day, UPS Next Day, Best Overnight and Mike’s Delivery are excluded from ground comparisons. Other service labels in these historical exports form the LTL group.
- Statistics: medians and interquartile ranges within actual-weight bands. Expedited ratios compare prices within each matched scenario before taking the median.
- Scope: supplier quote estimates for the sampled products and destinations. These are not actual orders, invoices, guaranteed delivered prices or a representative survey of all US shipments. Current charges and delivery requirements must be confirmed for your order.
Frequently asked questions
Why can packaging cost so much to ship?
Dimensions, destination, service and quantity all affect freight. In this historical sample, the cheapest ground freight quote was at least half the product value in 696 of 957 scenarios (73%), and met or exceeded product value in 408 (43%). These were supplier quote estimates, not completed customer orders.
When was LTL cheaper than parcel in this sample?
LTL was cheaper in 9 of 40 paired scenarios in the 45–70 lb band, or 22.5%. Parcel was cheaper in the other 31. Actual weight alone does not identify the cheapest service; compare quotes for the same products, quantity and destination.
