Shallow Boxes: Compare Footprint and Inside Depth

A shallow box needs enough floor space for the packed item and enough depth for everything above and below it. Increasing the length does not increase the depth. A wide, thin pack and a smaller layered pack can therefore need different cartons.

Compare the candidates below against the complete packed dimensions, including any inserts, protection and accessories. The first three are shallow formats; the final two offer additional depth for arrangements that do not fit a 3- or 4-inch carton.

All five are listed as kraft corrugated boxes and sold in bundles of 25. The measurements are inside dimensions. Measure the finished outside carton separately if you need external shipment dimensions; do not use this table as an outside measurement.

Worked comparison: more length does not solve excess height

Suppose your complete flat pack measures 19 × 13 × 2½ inches. SKU 20143, at 20 × 14 × 3 inches inside, is a dimensional candidate. SKU 18144 has more depth, but its 18-inch length is shorter than the pack's recorded 19-inch length. Extra depth does not make up for that shortfall.

Now consider a pack measuring 17 × 13 × 3½ inches. SKU 18144 becomes a dimensional candidate because its 18 × 14 × 4 inch interior exceeds those measurements. SKU 20143 is longer, but its 3-inch depth is insufficient for the recorded 3½-inch stack.

Both examples use hypothetical packed measurements. A dimensional screen identifies what to test, not what is safe to ship. Trial the actual arrangement and confirm that it loads and closes normally without compressing the contents.

Separate the footprint decision from the depth decision

Start with the length and width of the completed arrangement. Check the widest edges, corner protection and anything that extends past the main product. Then measure depth at the highest point. A localized accessory or raised frame can set the required depth even if most of the pack is thin.

Do not use total cubic volume to establish fit. Two cartons can have similar volume and very different shapes. Nor should you assume that rotating a delicate item is acceptable merely because the measurements then appear to fit. Evaluate the intended product orientation and packing method.

When to examine a deeper alternative

SKU 14105 provides a 14 × 10 × 5 inch interior, while 13136 provides a 13 × 13 × 6 inch interior. They may be worth evaluating when a shorter arrangement exceeds the shallow candidates' depths. They are not automatic substitutes: their footprints also differ.

More empty space may require a different method of supporting or retaining the contents. This comparison makes no claim that a deeper or shallower carton provides better protection. Board designation and dimensions alone do not establish a product-specific load limit.

Turn the selected SKU into the right order quantity

One bundle contains 25 boxes for every item in this comparison. Two bundles contain 50 boxes, and four contain 100. Keep any testing, rejected units or reserve stock separate from the number assigned to customer orders. These counts describe units purchased, not a forecast of usable capacity for your operation.

Open 1293, 20143 or 18144 for the shallow candidates. Compare 14105 and 13136 when more depth is needed. For a layered arrangement, use the packed-depth workflow before finalizing the size.
