USPS Ground Advantage: 2026 Rates, Delivery Times, Size Limits and Fees

Updated October 28, 20262026 ratesDelivery times

USPS Ground Advantage is the Postal Service's standard package service: 2 to 5 business days across the lower 48 states, with tracking and $100 of insurance included, for packages up to 70 lb and 130 inches in length plus girth. Retail prices start at $8.40 for up to 8 oz going to zone 1, and a 1 lb package costs $10.05 to $13.65 depending on distance. Its retail prices are lower than Priority Mail's at every weight and zone, and it replaced First-Class Package Service in July 2023.

What USPS Ground Advantage is

Ground Advantage took effect on July 9, 2023 as the new name for First-Class Package Service, and USPS folded Retail Ground and Parcel Select Ground into it at the same time. First-Class Package Return Service became Ground Advantage Return.

How long Ground Advantage takes

USPS publishes 2 to 5 business days within the contiguous United States, and delivery is not guaranteed. Since April 1, 2025, packages mailed from Post Offices more than 50 miles from their regional processing center can take one extra day, though the published range is still 2 to 5 days. Packages between the lower 48 and Alaska, Hawaii or the US territories always move by surface transport and take 10 days or more. Hazardous materials inside the lower 48 typically take 2 to 8 business days.

Ground Advantage rates for 2026

Under 1 lb, USPS prices by 4, 8, 12 and 15.999 oz steps, and any fraction moves up to the next step. At retail the 4 and 8 oz steps share one price and the 12 oz, 15.999 oz and 1 lb steps share another, so there are only two prices under a pound. From 1 lb up, any fraction rounds up to the next whole pound. These retail prices include two temporary increases that run through January 16, 2027.

Prices after January 16, 2027

USPS says both temporary increases end on January 17, 2027, when prices return to their approved levels. Unless a new price change replaces them first, that brings Ground Advantage retail prices down like this:

Ground Advantage retail prices now and after January 17, 2027
Weight Zone 1 Zone 5 Zone 8
1 lb $10.05 now, $8.85 after $11.70 now, $10.15 after $13.65 now, $11.95 after
5 lb $13.75 now, $12.00 after $18.85 now, $16.15 after $27.45 now, $24.10 after
10 lb $16.75 now, $14.75 after $24.25 now, $21.15 after $40.85 now, $36.55 after
20 lb $24.00 now, $21.05 after $37.90 now, $32.55 after $72.15 now, $64.25 after

Size and weight limits

A Ground Advantage package can weigh up to 70 lb and measure up to 130 inches in length plus girth. That makes it the only retail USPS service that takes packages over 108 inches. From more than 108 up to 130 inches, USPS charges an oversized price by zone regardless of weight, from $116.00 at zone 1 to $301.75 at zones 8 and 9, and oversized packages pay no nonstandard fees. Anything over 70 lb or 130 inches cannot be mailed: since July 12, 2026, USPS charges $200 to release one found in its network and treats it as abandoned after 14 days.

Length is the longest side. Girth is the distance around the thickest part, which for a box is twice the width plus twice the height. Measure the outside in inches and add the two together, or use the length plus girth calculator.

Dimensional weight

Packages over 1 cubic foot, or 1,728 cubic inches, are billed at dimensional weight when it is higher than actual weight. Round each side up to the next whole inch, multiply length by width by height, divide by 139 and round up to the next pound. USPS changed the divisor from 166 to 139 on July 12, 2026, which raised the billed weight of every large, light box. A 14 x 14 x 14 inch box holding 4 lb of pillows bills as 20 lb: $37.90 to zone 5 instead of $17.80. A 12 x 12 x 12 inch box is exactly 1,728 cubic inches, so it always pays actual weight. The dimensional weight calculator shows the billed weight for any box.

Nonstandard fees

USPS Ground Advantage retail nonstandard fees, Notice 123
When it applies Fee
Longest side more than 22 inches, up to 30 inches $4.50
Longest side more than 30 inches $10.00
Volume more than 2 cubic feet, or 3,456 cubic inches $21.00
Nonstandard shape or material: tubes and rolls, cans, wooden or metal boxes, more than 24 oz of liquid in glass or 1 gallon or more in metal or plastic $4.50
Live animal or perishable handling $7.50

A length fee and a shape fee do not add up: a package that triggers both pays the higher one. The volume fee can be charged on top of either. For the volume fee, USPS rounds each side to the nearest whole inch. A 32 x 8 x 8 inch box pays the $10.00 length fee, and a 24 x 18 x 12 inch box pays both the $4.50 length fee and the $21.00 volume fee on top of its postage.

What comes with it

  • Tracking on every package.
  • $100 of insurance on outbound and return shipments, with up to $5,000 more available for merchandise.
  • Free Package Pickup from your home or office during regular mail delivery.
  • Hazardous materials: Ground Advantage is the main USPS option for hazmat that cannot fly, and it has no hazmat handling fee. Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express charge $7.50 for hazmat since July 12, 2026.

Packaging for Ground Advantage

Ground Advantage uses your own packaging. USPS-made Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express boxes, Flat Rate boxes included, are only for those services: ship Ground Advantage in one and you pay Priority Mail prices, even with the box turned inside out. Because price follows weight and size, the smallest package that protects the item costs the least. Clothes and other soft goods fit 10 x 13 inch poly mailers or 12 x 15 1/2 inch poly mailers, which stay light and rarely reach the 1,728 cubic inch dimensional weight line. The poly mailer size chart matches mailer sizes to what you ship, and how to measure a box covers boxes.

20 lb, zone 8 $72.15 $113.70 $41.55

Priority Mail buys 2 to 3 day delivery, free USPS boxes and Flat Rate pricing. Flat Rate is the one case where Priority Mail can cost less: a Medium Flat Rate Box goes anywhere for $25.80, against $40.85 for 10 lb to zone 8 by Ground Advantage, so dense, heavy items going far often belong in one. See the Priority Mail box sizes for what fits.

Ground Advantage vs Media Mail

For books, records, DVDs and other qualifying media, Media Mail costs less: $5.13 for 2 lb to any zone, against $11.30 to $19.80 by Ground Advantage. Media Mail is slower, can be opened for inspection and takes only qualifying items. USPS Media Mail covers what qualifies.

Cubic pricing for business shippers

Commercial shippers can use Ground Advantage Cubic, which prices small, heavy packages by size instead of weight. Each piece must be 1 cubic foot or less, 20 lb or less, and 22 inches or less on its longest side, up from 18 inches on July 12, 2026. Boxes fall into 10 tiers from 0.10 to 1.00 cubic feet, soft packs are priced by length plus width in 5 tiers, and rolls and tubes do not qualify.

How to ship with Ground Advantage

  1. Pack it in a sturdy box or mailer with cushioning on every side, and seal every seam with 2 inch packing tape. Never use string, twine or masking tape.
  2. Weigh and measure it so you can check for dimensional weight and nonstandard fees.
  3. Buy postage at a Post Office counter or kiosk at retail prices, or online through Click-N-Ship at commercial prices. Online labels print at home, or you can bring a Label Broker QR code to a participating Post Office to print it there.
  4. Hand it off at a Post Office, or schedule a free Package Pickup online by 2 a.m. Central time on the pickup day. A package paid only with stamps that weighs more than 10 oz or is thicker than 1/2 inch must go to a Post Office clerk.
