A gallon zip lock bag measures 10 9/16 x 10 3/4 inches, a quart bag 7 x 7 7/16, a sandwich bag 6 1/2 x 5 7/8 and a snack bag 6 1/2 x 3 1/4. Two gallon bags are 13 x 15. What size zip lock bag do I need?
Measure the item, or the stack of items, at its widest points. The finder adds the thickness to both the width and the length, plus 1/4 inch of width and 3/4 inch of length so the zipper closes above the item, then picks the smallest household bag and the smallest stocked reclosable bags that fit either way round. If the bags will be filled quickly on a packing line, size up one step.

A few matches turn the bag sideways: a snack bag's contents fit a 4 x 7 reclosable bag through its 4 inch opening. Hefty rates a snack bag at about 1/3 quart and a sandwich bag at about 2/3 quart. Quart, gallon and 2 gallon are size names, and how much a bag holds depends on how full you pack it.

Hefty's quart and gallon figures are for its Press to Close bags, listed as Hefty prints them; those bags have an expandable bottom, so Hefty gives a third, smaller figure. Slider bags run shorter than zipper bags of the same name because the slider track takes room. A Ziploc slider gallon bag is 10 9/16 x 9 1/2 inches with a 2 5/8 inch pleat, and a Ziploc slider quart is 7 7/8 x 5 7/8 with a 1 7/8 inch pleat. Ziploc's half gallon freezer bag is 10 9/16 x 5 5/8 inches with a 3 1/2 inch expandable bottom.
How thick are zip lock bags?
Ziploc, Glad and Hefty do not publish a thickness in mils. They say only that freezer bags are thicker than storage bags, and Ziploc says its Heavy Duty bags are twice as thick as its storage bags. Commercial reclosable bags are sold by thickness: 2 mil, 0.002 inch or about 51 microns, suits food, retail packaging and light parts; 4 mil, about 102 microns, suits hardware, sharp edges and bags that get reused. How to measure a zip lock bag
- Lay the bag flat and empty.
- Measure the width straight across the zipper, edge to edge.
- Measure the height from the bottom fold to the top edge above the zipper.
- For a bag with an expandable bottom or pleat, measure that fold separately when it is opened out.
