How to choose filament and strapping tape

What filament tape does

Filament tape is a pressure-sensitive tape with fiberglass filaments embedded in a polypropylene or polyester backing. To close a box, apply strips as L-clips over the flap seam so each strip runs 2 to 3 in onto the box panels.

Pick the grade, then the width

The reinforced grades in the first table are rated 110, 180, 304 and 441 lb tensile strength, and each grade carries the same rating at every width. The listings put 110 lb at light-duty bundling and carton sealing, 304 lb at heavy products and reinforced case sealing, and 441 lb at bundling and palletizing. Most filament tape is 1/2 to 1 in wide.

Compare Scotch and 3M grades

The Scotch and 3M listings give thickness and construction. All come on 60 yd rolls except Scotch 8959 at 55 yd.

Filament or film strapping tape

Filaments reinforce the backing from inside, adding tensile strength and tear resistance. Film strapping tape has no filaments. The tensilized poly rolls are mono-oriented polypropylene film rated 90 lb tensile strength with 60 oz/in adhesion to steel, listed for light-duty bundling and palletizing.

Dispensers

For hand application, use the 1 in metal dispenser, the 2 in metal dispenser or the 3M HB901. The HB901 takes tape up to 1 in wide, and its blade is made to cut glass yarn.

Buying by the case

Full cases hold 96 rolls of 3/8 in, 72 of 1/2 in, 48 of 3/4 in, 36 of 1 in, 24 of 2 in and 12 of 3 in. Tensilized poly cases hold 144 rolls of 1/2 in, 96 of 3/4 in and 72 of 1 in. Many sizes also come in 6 or 12 roll packs, some at a lower price per roll than the full case. The product grid lists every pack.

Every price is for one case or pack. Volume pricing comes off at checkout: 3% when the cart holds 3 or more items and 5% at 6 or more. Each case or pack counts as one item. Orders of one or two items get free ground shipping in the US at $99 or more when the checkout shipping charge is $29.95 or less. Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $120 or less. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. Checkout shows the freight for your address before you pay.

Common questions

What is filament tape used for?

It closes and reinforces corrugated boxes, bundles items and unitizes pallet loads. Boxes are usually closed with L-clips over the flap seam. Heavy loads or weak boxes also get strips or bands of tape around the box.

What is the difference between filament tape and strapping tape?

The names overlap. Filament tape has glass or polyester filaments in the backing. Strapping tape also covers film tapes with no filaments, such as tensilized polypropylene and the blue 3M 8898.

Is filament tape the same as packing tape?

No. Standard packing tape gets its strength from the backing film and adhesive. Filament tape adds filaments for tensile strength and tear resistance. For everyday box closing, use carton sealing tape.

What is the strongest strapping tape here?

The highest tensile rating listed here is 441 lb, on the reinforced strapping tape in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 in widths. The Scotch and 3M listings give thickness instead of a tensile figure. Of the grades in stock, Scotch 898 and 3M 8981 are the thickest glass yarn tapes at 6.6 mil.

What does bi-directional filament tape mean?

The filaments run both along and across the tape, so it is reinforced in both directions. Scotch 8959 is the bi-directional grade here: 1 in x 55 yd rolls, 36 per case.
