How to choose gaffer tape

Pick a width

2 inch rolls are the standard width for taping cables to floors, and the most colors come in that width: 10 solid and 4 fluorescent. 1 inch rolls in black, red, white and yellow suit spike marks and labels. 3 and 4 inch rolls cover wider cable runs and bigger patches.

Pick a color

Dark colors such as black and gray blend into floors and stage decks, while white, yellow, red and the fluorescent colors mark spikes, edges and labels. The cloth takes marker, so any color can carry a label.

Gaffer tape or duct tape

Gaffer tape is cloth with a matte finish and an adhesive made to come off cleanly from most surfaces. Duct tape is polyethylene film over cloth with a more aggressive adhesive that often leaves residue. Use gaffer tape for cables, stages, sets and anything that has to come off clean, and duct tape for repairs. The gaffer tape guide compares the two.

Every price is for one case or pack. The cart takes 3% off the order at 3 or more items and 5% off at 6 or more, and cases from different rows count together. Orders of 1 or 2 items can ship free instead: at $500 or more when the freight rate is $45 or less, or at $1,000 or more when it is $90 or less. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. Checkout shows the freight for your address before you pay. Orders ship to street addresses in the contiguous United States.

What is gaffer tape?

A heavy cloth tape with a matte finish and an adhesive made to come off cleanly, used in film, stage and events to tape down cables and mark floors. Every gaffer tape here is 11 mil.

Does gaffer tape leave residue?
