Inventory Labels

Barcode density determines the minimum label size needed for reliable scanning at your typical scan distance. Labels scanned from several feet away on a rack require larger barcodes with lower density. Labels scanned at close range during picking can use higher-density barcodes on smaller labels. Verify your scanning distance before specifying label and barcode sizes to avoid scan failure rates that slow operations.

Permanent adhesive rack and bin labels should be used for locations that are defined and fixed in your facility layout. Repositionable or dry-erase label holders are better for dynamic storage environments where bin assignments change with inventory turns, seasonal product changes, or SKU additions and discontinuations throughout the year.

Color-coded label systems assign specific colors to product categories, zones, departments, or priority levels, allowing warehouse staff to identify the correct location group visually without reading every label. A well-implemented color coding system reduces pick training time, improves pick accuracy for new staff, and makes zone management more intuitive across the full facility floor.
