USPS vs UPS vs FedEx prices at retail

These are the published 2026 retail ground prices for actual weight. UPS retail rates apply at The UPS Store and UPS Customer Centers. USPS prices have no fuel or residential surcharge. UPS retail Ground from the lower 48 states carries no residential or fuel surcharge, and FedEx retail Ground prices already include residential, delivery area and fuel surcharges, so all three are close to the final price. Zones measure distance. UPS and FedEx also number their ground zones from 2 to 8 by distance from the origin.

USPS is lower than UPS at retail for every package up to 5 lb, and FedEx is lower than UPS in every one of the 77 price cells compared. From 30 lb up, both UPS and FedEx beat USPS in every zone. Between 10 and 30 lb the cheapest carrier changes with distance, so price that package with all three.

With a UPS or FedEx account

UPS daily rates, for shippers with a UPS account or scheduled pickup, and FedEx list rates, its equivalent, start lower than retail in nearly every cell. Then the extras go on top: a residential surcharge of $6.50 at UPS and $6.45 at FedEx for home deliveries, plus a fuel surcharge that changes every week, 29.5 percent at UPS and 29 percent at FedEx for the week of October 26, 2026. The two carriers' 2026 base ground rates sit within about a dollar of each other.

70 lb, zone 8 $204.30 $141.94 $142.29 $133.53 $133.97

For home delivery, USPS Ground Advantage at retail stays cheapest up to about 20 lb in most zones, and UPS and FedEx accounts win from about 30 lb. Business addresses skip the residential surcharge, which tips packages of about 10 to 20 lb going longer distances toward UPS and FedEx. USPS online prices through Click-N-Ship are lower than its retail prices, so they widen the USPS lead on light packages.

Dimensional weight can change the answer

Every carrier bills large, light boxes by size. USPS does it only for packages over 1,728 cubic inches, or 1 cubic foot, dividing by 139. UPS and FedEx apply it to every package, dividing by 139 on account rates and by 166 on UPS retail. All three round each side up to the next inch and the result up to the next pound. Here is the billed weight for a 2 lb item:

Billed weight for a 2 lb package by box size
Box Cubic inches USPS UPS and FedEx accounts UPS retail
10 x 8 x 6 in 480 2 lb 4 lb 3 lb
12 x 12 x 12 in 1,728 2 lb 13 lb 11 lb
14 x 14 x 14 in 2,744 20 lb 20 lb 17 lb
18 x 18 x 18 in 5,832 42 lb 42 lb 36 lb

Under 1 cubic foot, USPS charges actual weight, which is why a light item in a medium box usually ships cheapest by USPS. Over it, the only fix is a smaller box. The dimensional weight calculator shows the billed weight for any box, and how to measure a box covers the measuring.

Surcharges that make a package expensive

  • USPS length and volume fees: Ground Advantage adds $4.50 for a longest side over 22 inches, $10.00 over 30 inches, and $21.00 for packages over 2 cubic feet.
  • UPS and FedEx Additional Handling: a longest side over 48 inches, a second side over 30 inches, length plus girth over 105 inches, more than 10,368 cubic inches or more than 50 lb. The size triggers cost $30.00 to $40.50 at UPS and $29.50 to $40.75 at FedEx and bill at least 40 lb, and the weight trigger costs $46.00 to $58.75. UPS raises that minimum billable weight to 50 lb on December 21, 2026.
  • Soft packs: a poly mailer or bag larger than 18 x 14 x 6 inches at UPS, or 18 x 13 x 5 inches at FedEx, pays the packaging surcharge of $26.50 to $33.75.
  • Large packages: over 130 inches in length plus girth, over 96 inches long, over 17,280 cubic inches or over 110 lb, UPS and FedEx bill at least 90 lb and add $219.50 to $331.00.

How to pay less on any package

  • Use the smallest package that protects the item. Clothes and soft goods fit 10 x 13 inch poly mailers or 12 x 15 1/2 inch poly mailers, and the poly mailer size chart matches sizes to items.
  • Weigh to the ounce. Ground Advantage retail has one price up to 8 oz and one up to 1 lb, and every carrier rounds a fraction of a pound up to the next pound.
  • Keep USPS boxes at or under 1,728 cubic inches and 22 inches long, which avoids both dimensional weight and the length fee.
  • Send books and media by Media Mail.
  • Put dense items going far in a Flat Rate box. A Large Flat Rate Box costs $36.10 to any zone, against $70.53 for 20 lb cross-country by FedEx retail.
  • Buy USPS postage online through Click-N-Ship for commercial prices below retail.
  • Drop packages off. USPS Package Pickup is free, a UPS one-time pickup costs extra, and FedEx charges no drop-off fee.

Prices change soon

UPS raises daily rates an average 5.9 percent on December 21, 2026, and FedEx raises list rates an average 5.9 percent on January 4, 2027. USPS goes the other way: its temporary increases end on January 17, 2027, when Ground Advantage retail prices return to approved levels, such as $8.85 instead of $10.05 for 1 lb to zone 1, unless a new USPS price change takes effect first. The USPS shipping calculator prices any package across every USPS service, and USPS Ground Advantage covers that service in full.
