Packaging Price Index — Q3 2026: What Shipping Boxes Actually Cost
The Packrift Packaging Price Index tracks what standard shipping supplies actually cost in the United States. This edition (Q3 2026, published July 2026) is built from three datasets: live retail prices on 1,196 standard 32 ECT kraft corrugated boxes, Google Shopping market price benchmarks on 1,000 packaging offers, and 690 parcel carrier rate quotes across UPS, FedEx, and USPS to 10 US destination zones. It is updated quarterly. All figures are medians, not averages, so single outliers do not move them.
Key findings
- The median standard 12 x 12 x 12 shipping box costs $1.62 per box when bought in bundles.
- Box cost scales with size, but not linearly: per cubic foot of capacity, small boxes run a median $4.21/ft³ while oversize boxes fall to $1.12/ft³ — larger boxes cost roughly a quarter as much per unit of space.
- Carrier ground shipping for a typical bundle of boxes runs a median $8.31 to nearby zones and $11.03 cross-country at best-available carrier rates.
- Freight is a structural cost in this category: across bundles where we hold both numbers, best-carrier freight adds a median 48% on top of the product price itself.
- Measured against Google Shopping's market benchmark price on 1,000 packaging offers, 79% of Packrift's catalog prices sit below the market benchmark (median -17%).

What it costs to ship boxes
Best-available ground rates quoted across UPS, FedEx, and USPS for bundle-sized parcel shipments of packaging supplies, May 2026 quote sweep, 10 US destination zones from 5 regional origin warehouses.
| Destination | Median best-carrier ground rate |
|---|---|
| Nearby zones (0–2) | $8.31 |
| Cross-country zones (8–9) | $11.03 |
| All zones | $10.96 |
Two practical notes. First, freight often rivals the product itself: on the bundles where we hold both a live carrier quote and a retail price, freight adds a median 48% on top of the product cost. Second, oversized boxes can trigger dimensional weight pricing, where carriers charge on volume rather than scale weight — check the dimensional weight calculator before committing to a box that ships mostly air.
Packrift vs the market benchmark
Google Shopping publishes a market benchmark price per product cluster, aggregated across advertisers. Comparing Packrift's live catalog prices against that benchmark on 1,000 packaging offers: the median Packrift offer prices 17% below its market benchmark, and 79% of offers sit at or below benchmark. Methodology
- Street prices: live retail prices on packrift.com, July 2026, restricted to 32 ECT kraft corrugated boxes with machine-parseable dimensions and bundle counts (n = 1,196 of 1,786 active box products). Per-box price = bundle price ÷ bundle count. Medians and interquartile ranges only.
- Market benchmark: Google Merchant Center price competitiveness report, US, top 1,000 benchmarked packaging offers, July 2026. Benchmark prices are Google's aggregate of advertiser prices per product cluster; no individual competitor's price is used or shown.
- Freight: 690 best-of-carrier parcel ground quotes (UPS, FedEx, USPS) captured May 2026 across 69 representative SKUs, 5 origin warehouses (IL, PA, TX, GA, CA) and 10 destination zones. Rates are carrier-direct quotes for bundle-sized shipments; they exclude oversize LTL freight.
- Cadence: updated quarterly. Next edition: October 2026. Historical editions remain published for trend comparison.
